How many of u use a UV filter?

Was considering on ditching all my UV filters from my lens kit. Do they cause enough loss in quality to remove them. I know most people suggest having them as a first protector in the event your lens hits something. After watching a youtube on caring for your gear, one photog said he doesnt use UV filters, but makes sure his lens hoods are all on. This he mentioned offers better protection and doesnt degrade IQ.

Moose is lying... everyone uses a filter hahaaha

I have lens hoods for all my lenses, more protection than filters and they don't degrade IQ. IMO filters are a waste of money unless you're shooting in harsh conditions and want to complete the weather seal on an L lens.

I definitely do not use them.

But I am at the same time careful when the lens is otherwise exposed, if for some reason I'm working without a lens hood. Most of the time, I'm using a lens hood, but I don't have one for every single lens.

In particular though, for outdoor work, I don't like what the UV filter does for sky tonality, and using one makes vignetting more likely in wider views, when stacking a ND or polarizing filter.

Yes, I agree, I found the vignetting when stacking.

Never a UV filter but I (almost) always use a hood.

Thank you!! This question has to be the single most asked one on this board...

I use a uv filter because it came in a kit, but I took out the glass element and then add whatever creative nonsense I please (plastic wrap, duct tape with holes, screen material, colored glass/plastic)

I personally use them, but only higher quality well known brands. The hood is always on my lens, but I guess the UV filter is just a safety blanket for me.

Same here... I used to use them on all lenses all the time, till POTN made me see the light (no pun intended) Even though I had good UV filters, my shots are much better now that I took the filters off, use hoods, and shoot RAW. I do put them on as an added measure of protection when needed as said above, but not often.

I never EVER (except grad ND's) use a filter. Why pay so much money for gear to stick more glass in front of it? Most front elements are tough enough to take a bump which will do minimal or no damage. If your a clutz and going to wreak expensive gear, stay with kit lenses. My hoods (if I use them which I hardly ever do except the 400L) will do what ever needs to be done.

I'll use UV or Skylight filters on all my Canon lenses........when they're mounted on my Canon film cameras (dependent on the film used and lighting) and on the DSLR's only if there is an environment where there is water spray or a lot of dust. Otherwise on the DSLR's it's just the hood for protection.
