I had actually set out for a trip with my buddy and his new 400mm lens looking for an owl I had spotted month or so back. After searching the trees for a good hour in the area I had seen it prior, we were on our way home unsuccessful. a good 10 minutes down the road my buddy Logan yells stop I see one.

Sure enough there was an elusive full sized male Great Grey Owl. Amazing perched on a fence post just off the Highway. we pulled over to get some better shots. I thought surely if we exit the car he will spook and fly away. Slowly Logan exited with his new lens and the Owl could not be bothered by our presence. I got out for a few shots of my own.

I was sporting my measly 55-250mm lens. It failed in comparison to his new toy. As we were setting up the tripod the Owl was locking onto something. He had spotted a mouse and flew towards us. He literally flew between me and logan and caught this mouse between us. I managed to zoom out and snap a couple shots hand held. These are the 2 shots that followed.

you can see the mouse in his clutch

After following him to where we thought he had landed, we began to hear some loud shreiks. There in front of us were 3 Owlets. Now these 3 were big and could fly just fine but I'm thinking from all the down and fluffy feathers they are this year or last years litter and still grouping together.

Keep in mind I was shooting with my 55-250mm and still managed to get these shots. We were able to get to within 10 feet of these owls and they weren't phased in the slightest.

I cannot wait to go back and hopefully I can try my supposed Buddies lens on them!!!!

Very nice shots. I'm always amazed that owls cam fly with that completely non aerodynamic head.
