Both cameras use the same basic 9 point AF system so there may not be much difference there. However, the T3i uses the later model Digic 4 processor (vs Digic 3 in the XSi) so there may be some better AF algorithms with the Digic 4, I've just never seen any claims for that.

The T3i uses the 63 zone dual layer metering system, so metering should be improved over the 35 zone system on the XSi.

The T3i has 18 MP to the XSi's 12 MP.

The rear LCD display is much better on the T3i. First of all, it is articulated for viewing at almost any angle. Secondly, here is the Canon description of the screen: "Vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor (3:2) for shooting at high or low angles and 1,040,000-dot VGA with reflection reduction using multi coating and high-transparency materials for bright and clear viewing. (external link) The display on the XSi is only 230k dots, so the difference is significant.

The T3i can control a compatible external flash wirelessly, the XSi cannot.

The T3i has native ISO 6400 capability expandible to 12,800 while the XSi is limited to ISO 1600, so the T3i has much improved low light shooting capability.

I hope that you find this helpful.

Thanks Yogi

You're welcome!

I was hoping that some of the T3i owners might chime in.

If she wants better AF and wants to keep the rebel size/ergonomics, she wants the 650D/t4i. Anything older than that will not give her improved AF.
