Should I get the 85mm 1.8 now and get the triple rebate?

I've read here on the forums that there are horror stories regarding Canon rebates, that you don't get the full rebate amount. Is this true? Because I was thinking of getting the 85mm 1.8. I could just get it now instead of next year, to get the triple rebate since I also purchased a 350D and a 70-200 f4L recently.
My main concern is that it overlaps with the 70-200, but its just that for portraits, its just so good! :) I remember playing with my buddy's XT with the 85 and got this pic...

This was the first time I've ever seen "Bokeh", not even knowing what it was before that. I know a zoom will never beat the quality of the prime, so I'm pretty much sold on the 85. So anyone think otherwise that I should get this lens?

Yes, a few people had trouble with their rebates. Some very slow, some not rec'd. I wouldn't buy a lens based on any rebate. Either you have the $ and the need now or maybe should think it over a bit more, only you know the answer to that ?

I've gotten a few rebates and it took so long, when I got them, it was a nice surprise. Don't buy the lens if you are depending on the money coming back soon. It will be later. Also, how much are you planning to spend on the 85 f1.8 anyway? I bought mine without a rebate and I think it was worth it. It is a great lens, my favorite.

Oh, my mistake, I think I better rephrase. Well, I am definitely getting the 85 1.8, rebate or not. I don't mind paying retail for it, hopefully within the price range of B&H. What my question should have been was to ask if I should still get the 85 1.8 even though I have a 70-200, since the 85 is within that range. I want to get into portraits, and was wondering if the 70-200 will do for now. Hence my reasoning, "If I'm getting it anyway, why not just get it now and take advantage of the rebate?". Any advantages the 85 has over the f4 in terms of portrait taking?

If you're going to get it at some point, and can afford it now, why not take advantage of the rebate? Mine have all come through fine.

The 85 f/1.8 will give you a nice shallow depth of field you won't be able to get at f/4. That's a very-nice-to-have.

Your wallet might hate the forum, but your camera won't.

Buy it now! It's a marvelous lens that will remain on your camera most of the time.

If you are worry about not receiving your rebate check, you should look at Ebay.
They usually sell them at good prices without having to worry about rebates.

^^^ Wow, that's a decent price! Well current bid that is. At least there's no reserve. I'll see how high it goes. Might be worth getting this one if the price is right. :)

But oh yes, I do love this lens! Its what I always use when I was just playing around with my buddy's XT. :D

Get the lens - it's good to have the 85mm 1.8 vs the 70-200 f4L for a number of reasons

  1. You can shoot in lower light without flash
  2. You can get a much shallower depth of field
  3. You get lovely bokeh
  4. It's not as intimidating as the 70-200 if you're shooting portraits
  5. It's a lot lighter if you're taking it to an event

How does one go about getting the rebate (x3) if you did'nt buy all three lenses at the same time? once you've sent in the rebate for one lens will they give you another rebate when you send in for the second? for instance last week I bought an 85mm and thought I was going to buy a sigma 12-24 so I got th 85 and sent in the paperwork. then I got the sigma and i hated it so I bought the 17-40 this weekend- how can I still get my double rebate on the 85? Please let me know I could use the cash.
