Insurance doesn't cover cameras outside of U.S. - take on cruise anyway?

Ok, I just found out that my insurance policy (Hill & Usher/Hartford) does not cover my camera equipment outside of the US, Canada and Puerto Rico and will not even offer short-term coverage. I am going on a cruise and was going to take my 1D Mk IV, 70-200 2.8 L IS II and 16-35 with me and am now having second thoughts.

I might just spring for a waterproof point and shoot to take along instead, but I really wanted to have the good gear when we go to the Mayan ruins and river tour in Belize.

Has anyone else run into this same problem and rolled the dice and went ahead and took their gear anyway? The ship staterooms have safes in them, so I feel pretty secure from that standpoint. I was really going to use the gear on board and for that one Mayan excursion (the other excursions involve diving, snorkeling so I wasn't gonna take the 1D on those).

Part of me says just grab a new waterproof point & shoot and travel light, but I feel I may regret not having the 1D and good lenses.

Decisions, decisions...............

You mentioned The Hartford...

Is yours a business policy or a personal articles policy?

May not be enough time at this point.

Interesting and unfortunate. I have a Hartford policy as well so I guess I'd better get with my agent before I do anything outside the US.

If it breaks abroad just wait til you get back and claim it happened here? This is very plausible for 2 reasons.

1) likely nothing will happen to it since you sound careful
2) Chances are it wouldn't break 100% over there. I would imagine it could still take some shots (albeit poor). So just use it over here (under harsh circumstance of course) until it finally bites the bullet.

Not really worried about breakage, just theft.

How much of an issue would it be if it was stolen and you had to fork out for it all over again to replace it? If you can't afford to lose it and replace it all, don't take it and look into other insurance for next time.

Split the difference and take the 50D and an all round lens.

Kinda painful, probably around $7700 for everything. Not to mention that 1D Mk IVs are becoming harder to come by. That's why I'm leaning toward the P&S. Also less stuff to lug around.

Thought about that as well. The 50D has over 120K clicks on it, so I just have to hope it doesn't die and will work in the massive humidity. Could rent an 18-200 or something like that.

EDIT: 18-200 rentals are dirt cheap--$60 for 2 weeks. Sounds like we may have a plan here...Thanks Laura.

For that matter, you could rent a full setup.

Sounds like a pretty xenophobic insurance outfit to me.
Nothing (other than cost) stopping you taking out insurance with a more enlightened company right away and cancelling the existing one at your leisure.
