A big part of why I got into nature photography was to learn about the subjects I love to shoot. Initially that was birds, which I've become pretty proficient in IDing, but now I've expanded into the much more diverse and widespread world of insects/arthropods. I've been out experimenting and having fun with my new MP E65 and now find that I am in need of a good insect field guide that includes flies. Can anyone recommend one? or two? Here are a couple of flies that I shot on my backyard this weekend in NW Pennsylvania. It was thinking the second one is a house fly, but have no clue on the first.

Thanks much in advance!

Great shots.

I am sure someone will come along and correct me, but I think #1 may be a muscid fly.

Edit: If Brian does not know, then ignore my ID

Both lovely captures,
Fly ID's can get fairly difficult unless you are an expert. I tend to only try to ID more distinctive/odd looking flies and even then, it's rarely to the species level.

I live in Ontario (quite nearby). I have the same problem but no solution. I can tell you what doesn't work. Due to the number of species, any general insect guide can at best cover some of the shots. I made a further mistake in getting one for too big a region of coverage. There are also more specialized books (e.g., there is one for dragonflies). They can be time consuming to use, but certainly are much more comprehensive. There aren't much on subjects that aren't popular enough (spiders, flies, etc seem unpopular outside this forum :( ). If you find something decent, let me know ... Debbie
