Hi All
I have a Rebel XT and was wondering if anyone had tried the Sigma 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DGMacro
I`m looking for a budget zoom
Thanks

Dave

Yes, someone has tried it. They even wrote down their impressions places like here (external link). The reviews aren't very positive, which is what i'd expect from a superzoom lens. eg

I'd only recommend this lens to a user who could afford nothing better, and "must" carry only one lens. It's the worst slr lens I have ever owned.

You know on the flip side I hated the few Tamron 28-200mm super zooms I've used but I really love my Sigma 18-125mm on my drebel.

I like it enough that the 18-200mm Sigma's and Tamron's seem tempting.

I too have only used the older non DG model, but the results will be VERY similar to the new one. The DG design is allmost identical.
FWIW i found it (and several other superzooms i tried) gave pictures that never quite satisfied. These designs definitely give results that sit somewhere near the bottom of any lens image quality chart.

Or to put it another way- if you are happy with the results you get from lenses such as the 18-55 kit lens or any other cheap kit lenses (35-80,28-80,28-90,etc) then you will be happy with the sigma

I have to agree with Ron on that one. Depends on what satisfies the picture-taker image wise and budget wise.

There's really too much spread in focal length on that one. Seems like those "all in one" superzooms really aren't very sharp. Consider the Tamron 28-75 instead. It's below $500 and is sharp as a tack.

At 270 bucks it's not a "budget" zoom at all.

Unless you have a very good reason to have only one lens, you're better off bying a few different ones.

Canon Kits lens 18-55 = 50-70 bucks used
50/1.8 = 70 bucks new
Some 70-300 or 75-300 zoom = 70-100 bucks used.

Any of these will perform better than 28-300 and the kit would still fit your budget:

Separate lenses which specialize in different things are much better than one which does it all.

Exactly, it's still a consumer lens at that price but starting to get out of the "training" lens catagory & into the "cover all possibilities, carry around travel lens" catagory, which is what it was designed for. If that's what you want & are prepared to work within it's limitations (ie, don't come back later & say "it's soft at 300 when I shoot wide open"), then who's to "nay say" that??

Just returned after many years hiatus from this forum. I was a bit of a prat before, if I ever offended you, I'm sorry

Do consider the Sigma 18-200. It's almost as sharp as the 18-125 and gives you the range you want. Sure, it doesn't go to 300 but believe me, the difference between 200 and 300 wont really be missed. However, the difference between 18 and 28 is giant.

Also try it before you buy, the Sigma I have can be hit and miss with the focus. Noticed it more now I have a Canon L lens... it now shows me how bad the Sigma can be.

Shutter speed? Crop? Looks pretty soft, I'm afraid. You should probably be at around 1/500 sec. hand-held on that.
