Damn, that's annoying.

I didn't encounter this error (yet) on my S100. I have a serial number that matches the one listed, which starts with a 41.

If this error hasn't occurred, should I still send it in?
And how would you package it?

Where has anyone seen an official announcement that it is a "recall"?

The Canon site indicates that it is a "Product Advisories" notice, and that they will fix broken ones out-of-warranty at no charge if the malfunction is caused by this phenomenon.

Nowhere can I find that you should send it in under a "Recall" if it is functioning correctly at this time.

jfgarris... aren't you splitting hairs here. It iso probably not a recall because no one is in danger of bodily harm from it... hence necessitating a "recall". But they acknowledge there is a design defect, and they will fix it. Call it what you like. If it has stripes, it is probably.....

No ... there is a big difference. If it were truly a "recall", you could send your currently working camera in to Canon and they would fix the "potential problem" before it occurred and ruined your vacation (i.e. the 5D "mirror fix").

In this case, they will only accept it after it has failed and then fix those that did actually fail. The problem there is that you, the user of the camera, have no idea WHEN it will fail, and can't take preventative steps to have it fixed BEFORE it fails. That could really screw up your vacation if you only took the one camera.

Currently it appears that Canon will not accept working S100 cameras for repair of the lens malfunction issue.

Hopefully, Canon will reconsider and actually announce a true RECALL on the S100 so the owners can send them in for preventative repair at their convenience and again have trust in the camera to work properly when they need it.

He's right, it isn't a recall as mentioned above. Harley Davidson had a problem with their Twin Cam touring engines in 1999 without going into detail, etc. They acknowledged the problem, BUT, would only fix it, IF, it broke.. Many owners wanted the fix for preventive measures, but HD wouldn't allow it, etc.

Either way, it's out there for S100 owners for reference purposes, etc.

Ok.... I work in marketing and to me it is all the same issue, just an attempt to control the damage. The HD story is funny... I have an Ultra Glide Classic... and there is always something that just isn't right with it. But that is what makes riding an HD an adventure.

I also love this phrase too;

"However, please note that affected products which are received by Canon after their service period ends (the period during which such products are expected to be serviceable),..."

and that "expected to be serviceable period" is what? I don't see anywhere on the packaging saying this camera only serviceable until xx/xx/xxxx. It would be good to know what Canon deems to be a camera serviceable life.

My S100 has been working great, and I use it a lot. However, I am now reluctant to rely on it alone for a trip or other photo need ... I have to carry a backup camera too. My S100 serial number is within the numbers listed.

If Canon would make this an official "recall", I could send my S100 in at my convenience for inspection/repair and have less fear that it would fail at a bad moment for me. Obviously, any camera can fail at any time, but there must be a lot of these cameras having the lens problems for Canon to make the advisory announcement. This admission of a high failure rate creates apprehension that mine will be one of them.

Sell the 100 and get a 95 lol.. Then you don't have to worry.
When I do carry my 95, the only thing that would back it up is my iPhone if the 95 failed or battery died.

I see Canon has an official recall on the new T4i/650D DSLR regarding the front rubber grips.

As shown in the Service Advisory, you can enter your serial number, and if it is within the affected range, you will be allowed to schedule a repair/replace at your convenience without having to wait and see if the problem actually develops in your unit.

Hopefully, they will do the same for the S100. :)
