IS Problems with Canon 17-55mm f/2.8

It jumps like that with or without the IS turned on/off. Is the IS messing up, or a sensor? I updated the firmware from 1.2.3 to 1.2.5 (latest) on the 7D body. I also tried the lens on a different 7D body and it still had the same issue. I was taking pictures earlier today at a car show and it worked fine until the last couple pictures I took it started acting up. The pictures came out clear but it would just keep jumping. Now it just jumps like that when I turn the camera on. Is there a fix that I can personally do or a shop I can send it to? I have a open ticket with Canon, but before sending it in I wanted to make sure I had exhausted my options. Thanks for any help!

Interesting. How old is the lens? I would send it back it is a costly piece of equipment. If I buy an lens for more than 300 dollars new I always get buy a warranty that covers everything from routine failure to dropping...just in case. Good luck

I have no idea. I bought it used a little over two years ago and has worked like a charm up until today.

My IS on my 17-55 did that when the AF broke. It broke several times, even after repair by Canon.

When I complain about the 'cheap' build of the lens, it's not about the materials, it's about the prone to failure AF and IS mechanisms.

Do you remember how much it cost to have repaired? If this is a common issue then I might need to switch to a different lens.

How does the camera body behave with a different lens?

I do not have another lens that has IS, but I did try the body with a 50mm f/1.4 and it didn't have any issues. The lens had the same issue with my 7D body as it did with a friend's 7D body.

Roger at LensRentals.com and POTN member also, did a write up on the IS failures with this lens happening a lot with he's rentals. However he later reported that the failure rate had dropped off.

So a Canon design change?

Could be possible, I hope so. The lens is now on its way to Canon.

Early on there were a lot of complaints about the 17-55 getting dust inside the front element, too... As well as a lot of IS failures. I think they must have done some mid-production-run "silent upgrades" to it, since complaints on both are a whole lot less common now. An older lens still might have issues, tho.

Had to return my first one for an IS failure out of the box.The new one was was packed differently (better protected in a bigger box) and a later production run, and haven't had an issue since then.

Canon just sent me a pdf this morning with the bill, $171.97 total with taxes/shipping. The labor part is at $149. I called the factory to find out what is wrong with it but they will not give me any updates until they actually start working on it. $172 isn't too bad considering it will be calibrated and tightened up to being like new again. I had been wanting to have that done since I bought it used, so guess with the IS problem I was forced into getting it done now instead of continuing to put it off. Based on how good of a job they do, I might send in my 7D to have them fix the sensor cleaning noise.

Got the lens back, they replaced the IS unit. It had a white speck on one of the elements though. So it has been shipped back to Canon to have them clean it up, this time it is going to the Virginia repair center. I guess this is a good lesson to make sure you have a back up lens.
