Website statement regarding cameras at an event attended last evening.

<snipped from website>

Carry-in items may be subject to search. Entertainment contracts do not allow us to permit professional video, audio or camera recording equipment in Lock 3.

me again:

Do you read this as no camera? My bag was disallowed and returned to my car last night.

However, everyone there was taking iPhone video, saw some there with DSLRs and nice lenses.

I'm getting pretty tired of showing up with camera gear and being denied access when everyone else has a freaking iPhone, compact camera or other 'video recording' device available to them.

Yeah. It's really hard to argue with the people looking at your bag. Cameras on phones take decent pictures now, so that's really silly to not allow pictures.

As mentioned in that snip from the website, its usually the performer(s) (in the case of stage shows and concerts) that insist no pictures be taken. Its going to be very difficult for entertainment companies that put on these shoes to agree to enforce that clause with camera phones having digital zoom, flash etc.

It certainly does make for an unlevel playing field.

That was my thought. Guy right in front of me is recording minutes at a time with his iPhone. Another guy walks right past us with what looked to be a 5D2 and the standard kit lens. People all around us with pocket cameras with flashes taking shots.

Next time, baggy cargo shorts with body in one leg pocket and lens in the other! Tired of my camera being denied access to public places for a free show paid for by the city.

Exactly. And we all know that at least half the people there had a phone capable of taking video.

Google "press pass", look at images. A little cut, paste, print and laminate and you should be good to go.

In your first post, I think the wording is pretty clear. Professional equipment these days normally means "camera with detachable lens". The guy with the kit in front of you either had a pass or somehow avoided the guy who didn't let you in. To me< akron needs all the help it can get in terms of image. lol

FWIW, if you go to a Buckeyes game, they say very clearly "no cameras with detachable lenses". hard to get those close up shots with a phone or point and shoot from 300 feet away. I've tried. lol

With phone cameras you can record the sound as well as pictures. For a concert or show, you'ld think they'd be clamping down on those folks.

Just like the guys who video record just-released movies and then share them on bit-torrent sites. How do they get those cameras past movie theater security? Must be pocket sized.

m4/3 system with pancake and a tele in the back pocket should do the trick.

It might be me but it does not say no camera. It said no camera recording . it did not specify anything about still photos.

This is just a shot in the dark but what about going to an event and just enjoying the event. If one wants to get in with their DSLR there are avenues for some to be accommodated. Not everyone is going to get in but if you are a working pro or working towards that some venues will help you out if you start working with them early enough.

Its hard to be objective when you get denied and you see the person near you with a setup similar to yours that is sitting back in your car. Then again who ever said that life was supposed to be fair and equal.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Some will allow up to six inches of extendible length of lenses, anymore than that they will either tell you to put it in their care i.e. lost property or tell you to leave it somewhere safe other than your personal self otherwise you're not coming in

Funnily enough when I had brought my Canon Powershot S50, some stupid jobworthy security thought it would be good to bar me from entering a RHCP gig in 2004. I was so damned annoyed I went up to head security. He looked at the camera and told me to go in another way

The only reason I took my gear is because my wife's workmate was in the opening act and thought he might enjoy a few pics of his band playing in front of a couple thousand people. Plus, it's a really nice venue with lots to capture.
