Lens for architecture/buildings on 1.6x crop

I will give my 40D to my father, and he likes to photograph buildings. Not really large cathedrals, more in the space of normal buildings and nice houses (he's a civil engineer and architect).

What lens should I get for him? I was thinking a 17-40L.

In the future I'll make a gift out of a 24mm TS-E but I don't think that'll be the first step.

Canon 10-22mm.

I found the 17-40mm still a little narrow on my 40D. I then got the 10-20mm sig and have had no complaints since!

Depends how much money you want to spend but Sigma 8-16, Sigma 10-20, Tokina 11-16, and Canon 10-22 are all solid choices.

Isn't 22mm maximum focal length a little wide for one-family houses and the like?

I think 10-22 is too wide, 17-40 will be more appropriate

Maybe you could provide an example of what he would be shooting? (Like a photo maybe)

If you think the ultra wide lenses are too wide, consider a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS?

Why not the EF-S15-85? It's nicely wider than 17mm, and has the long 85mm as well. I don't think he needs an L lens, particularly.

Agree, I thought the TS-17 is the proper lens for Architectural work.

As I said in the original post, the TS-E lenses will be phase two in the birthday rushes.
