Hi all, new here. I just bought a 1Ds Mark II with a bad shutter with intention to get it replaced. The body is in good condition, and I paid only $650. My question is this; is it easy to replace it yourself, or is it not worth the troubles? Anyone ever had Canon fix it? What would be an approximate cost? Thanks...

Search my Photo DIY Directory for shutter, there are images / videos for several EOS DSLR cameras, but not yours. If you have no problems with all those cables and little screws it should be no bigger problem.
Furthermore you could visit my DIY Infrared conversion page, there are some more links how to replace the IR cut filter of the camera - and this is in front of the shutter.
It was no really big problem on my EOS Rebel XT to get the shutter with the filter assembly out of the camera, even I don“t have much experience with electronics. I love mechanics more.

this might help you get an idea of the steps to get into the body, but there are more steps to get to the shutter mechanism. fyi, this is NOT an easy DIY process.

having done it, I'd say it definately isn't easy, but then again it isn't impossible - basicly you remove everything from the camera & you're left with the shutter on the frame. The hardest part is desoldering & resoldering some of the individual cables & connectors. You'd need a service guide but they're readily avail so no worries there.

See photo's of what's involved Here (external link)

The 1DS Mk II & 1D Mk II share the same shutter part so if you can find one for either then thats good - looks like they're going for arounf USD$179 these days - see: EBAY (external link)

I definately think if you're stripping down a camera to that level you'd best replace the whole shutter - there seems to be individual shutter curtain parts on ebay & I don't think it's a really good idea given the amount of time involved...

p.s welcome to the forums!

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Thanks guys. Now I'm really considering doing it myself... Any idea what it would cost to get it fixed at Canon?

how fast was the whole process? I'm very tempted to do it myself because it would cost me about $200.

I shipped it on July 2nd, Cannon received it on Friday, July 6th and it was on its way back to me by Thursday, July 12th arrived at my house on Monday the 16th. I'm in Texas working, so I still haven't gotten a chance to check out the camera.
