Hi all,
I just Bought a Markins Q3T ball head to go with my Gitzo 1542 Traveller, and I'm thinking of installing a Manfrotto 577 clamp on it. I do mostly video and the 577 is what I have on all my other gear, so it seems logical to also use it on the Markins so I don't have to switch plates on my camera when I move from video tripod to the Traveller. Has anyone tried this combination? I'm afraid the 577 may be a bit large and heavy for the Markins head.
Thanks

If you do this, Markins use red Loctite to seal their clamp onto the stud. It requires heat to remove it or you can send the clamp to Markins and they'll take it off for you.

I bought it without Loctite specifically so I'd have the option of mounting a different clamp, but yes, that would otherwise be the case.

Oh great! Sorry I can't help you with your 577 question but I'm sure someone knowledgeable will chip in soon. Today may be a bit of a slow day since it's a holiday...

Well, as far as mounting goes, it shouldnt be an issue as the 577 has on the bottom the standard female 3/8"-16 & 1/4"-20 threadings.

However the 1542/Q3T I cant imagine using for video as its def not designed for any kind of smooth movements a professional video look requires. You CAN do it, but Id really think if you SHOULD... There really is a valid reason to have a dedicated video tripod with a good fluid video head. I guess unless youre just doing fixed shots and not moving the camera at all on the tripod. If thats all youre doing than anything thatll hold it steady will work.

Just my two cents.

Thanks for your input, Ben. I'm not intending to shoot video with the Markins head. Bottom line - I'm incredibly lazy and would rather just use one QR plate for all my gear so I can just leave it on my camera. Also, I'm kind of partial to the 2" plate format, even if it's way bigger than your typical stills QR plate.
