Happy to see people enjoying this lens because it gets ragged on a lot, and probably 75% of those people are user error just like the huge amount that call their SLR soft and not like their P&S.

not so fast;) ......the problem with this lens when used on a 1.6x body (mainly the older ones D30,60,10 to name a few) was that this lens is very demanding.
front and back focus issues exist and if the body and lens aren't in perfect sync, there will be the "soft copy" issues.

i tested 3 copies and one out of the three were bang on. all three were sharp, but with "MF". AF revealed a different story, so calibration has a lot to do with the results.
user error exists, but no modern day camera and lens should be harder to use than a typical P&S.

There is a group that were sent out that had bad quality. That is true. And I do know some people actually ran into problems.

But even on here, I have seen people complain about the lens when they first got it, but then get used to it and see that it was user error.

And there are a lot of "my 20D is soft posts."

This equipment generally has a higher learning curve. However, there are also problems out there. The 24-70 does have bad copies that need re-calibration, there are Sigma 30 1.4's that do need recalibration,

but the user error does exist and sometimes is fed by seeing bad posts..... It's just human nature.... :)

I'm sorry you had problems.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Another good think I notice about this lens, is that autofocus is FAST! This lens in combination with my 580ex have made me happy, happy, happy.
