Hi

I can buy for the same price the following Cameras and need advice on which deal are the best:

Deal 1:
Canon 7D +
15-85mm IS 2.8f lens +
battery grip
(2 years old)

Deal 2
canon 1D Mk3 - body only + Charger
(4 Years old)

I do only action sport photography outdoors and occasionally indoors (karate or Gymnastics)

I know the 7D is newer and can take videos, but this is not applicable. The 1D is supposed to be better on 10 frames per second and better battery life with bigger processor, but does it counts.

My lens is a 70-200IS 2.8f (white) and is about 8 years old.

Please help me to decide.

I own both.

You would do great with either, but I would give a slight edge to the 1d3 in the AF and FPS department, the better choice for sports.

There is no such thing as a 15-85 2.8 though. There is a 15-85 IS 3.5-5.6, and a 17-55 2.8 IS.

Thanks, My mistake the lens is the 15-85 IS 3.5-5.6.

My heart says 1D and my brain say 7D as it is newer and there is more extras with it.

What will the effect be of the 1.3 crop factor of the 1D compared to the 1.6 of the 7D on the effective use of the 70-200mm lens and will the 1.4 multiplier be an option?

As for the 7D being newer, while yes it has more gadgets on it, is better in several ways on paper, and I personally love mine, if I had to pick up just one body for a day of serious shooting it would still be the 1D3.

As for the extra's, is the combo price with the lens a good price compared to just buying the 7D and 15-85mm seperately? Do you need the 15-85mm for what you shoot? Will it be redundant with you current lenses? If you won't need the "extras" they may not make a good deal at any price, if you do that is another story.

You could use a 1.4x or 2x on either body with full autofocus capabilities. The 7D clearly has a larger MP count, and smaller sensor, meaning considerably higher pixel density, but there is no reason you can't get steller sports photos with the 1D3's 1.3x 10MP sensor.

I shot sports with mine for 3 seasons of college athletics and so was just about every professional on either side of me (since the 1DIV wasn't out then of course), even after the 7D was released.

Ulimately though, if the 15-85mm is a lens you will use, and you feel the 7D is a good deal for you, I don't think you will find it a bad body, the 1D3 is just a bit quicker, IMO, in just about every way.

Normally I would say the 7d, but if only for sports and you can utilize the 10fps I would choose the 1d miii.

The 1d3 is an excellent camera with upgraded ergonomics and nice LCD. The problem is that today, it offers too little for too much.

If used 1d3 goes for about $1200, then it would be an great buy.

The other end of the spectrum which will save you lots of money is a used 1d2n. Used prices are around $700-$800.

Go with the 1D, better build quality, better AF, better burst rate, better crop, better everything. Plus it makes you look pro! :P
