Hi I'm looking to get a macro lens and found a Tamron Adaptall-II 90mm F2.8 (72B) model. for around 100 bucks ofcourse it doesn't came with EOS adapter so guess will need to get one.. I found on ebay the adapter with AF confirmation chip.. My budget for a Macro lens (right now) is not higher than 200 bucks so.. this lens is worth or should I pass ??

Edit: it's this lens http://www.tamron.co.jp/en/data/a2-lens/72b.html (external link)

Thanks.

It's the warmover of the legendary 90mm f/2.5, which was obviously slightly faster but only went to 1:2. I still have one of those in my cupboard - it's a very sharp lens.

The older Tamron 90mm macro seems to have sometimes hotspots with digital cameras - one seen reflections in iris form in the image.
This is because of not digital optimized lens design - there seems to be a flat lens surface inside.

Despite of this the lens seems to be a good performer.
It is a full manual lens on Canon EOS - no automatic iris!

No, I have the second version of the f/2.5 with the 55mm filter thread and plastic barrel.

All my shots with that lens are on slides and not scanned - and in order to preserve anonymity here I don't link from this account to my online galleries anyway. There are plenty of samples and tests online.

Yes, I read about this but couldn't reproduce it with my copy. In the end I bought the Zeiss so didn't persist with my tests.

The rear element on the f/2.5 is flat.

mmm that's interesting.. On my search I haven't found nothing regarding those hotspots. On the manual side i don't mind, also own some M42 lenses..

Ohh no prob, i understand the anonymity..
I only find mostly for the 52b (2.5) not much for the 72b (2.8) also on some sites say they are a bit rare ... even on http://www.adaptall-2.org/ (external link) it's not there :S

Here's what I had bookmarked:

My tests didn't have a bright image source in the frame like that, though.

Thanks interesting thread.. Another fellow just told me that the 72B is the early version of the current DI http://home.comcast.net/~tmoreau2/dyxum_90mm.htm (external link)

I think I will bite for that lens... Unless someone here say something lol...

My very first zoom was a Tamron Adaptal design. The biggest heap of complete rubbish I have ever come across! Tamron should be ashamed of themselves.

You need to distinguish between the standard Adaptall II and Adaptall II SP. This one is an SP.

If on a budget, extension tubes are the way to go. For example, you can get 0.7x max mag with a 50/1.8 and a 25mm tube.

My experience scared me for life. I will never ever buy anything made by Tamron. So the subtle differences between non SP and SP are lost on me. It's still Tamron.

I've had good experience with Tamron. So maybe it's your loss, my gain -- or something like that.
The cheap Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro non-di (less than $250) gives me great macro shots, portraits, even sports !
