really fun show to shoot...challenging, but also rewarding. very intermittent front lighting and blasts of strobes from the backline meant a lot of discarded frames (check the Who Are You Shooting thread for more detail). that said, i actually like this lighting, as i do prefer a high contrast look, and this is kinda tailor-made for me.

#1 is my favorite. I like #2 but the mic and hand covering most of her face ruins it for me. I have a crush on Alexis btw:lol:

Nice Tim. I love number 6.

I think Alexis is good from afar, but far from good TBH.

well at least her eyes and most of her nose are visible, but yeah, no mouth or chin...trade-offs, though...i crouched down to get the shot, in order to convey the same perspective of the fan who was reaching out. i could have stood higher to clear the mic issue but it would have been a different photo.

i wish i didn't blow focus a bit in #4...on the screen it looks ok but when you go 100% it's pretty soft.

the bass was one of the loudest i've ever heard, and that includes Sunn O))), Throbbing Gristle, GZA and Public Enemy.

Just saw these posted on your FB. Killer shots, Tim. Especially #1 & 4.

Got any tips for shooting SB? I'm shooting them next week and kinda nervous about the strobes + backlighting.

i shot most of the show w/ my 16-35, but also used my 35 and 85 primes (my 50 is still kaput and i've been too lazy to send it to fix). i didn't even bother w/ the 24-70, and used the 70-200 when shooting from the house.

even though the lights cycle fast, i would stick w/ manual, and use burst mode (something i don't usually do, but it worked pretty well here). AI Servo for sure, too.

i didn't even bother trying to get any isolated shots of the guitarists...if they wandered into the frame, that's fine. the show is all about Alexis.

one thing to note...the pit was narrow (so she could interact w/ the fans at the rail easier), and there was a wooden staircase that allowed her to get into the crowd at the end of the show, and then back on stage. because of that staircase, it was difficult to move around it, so i just stayed put on that side.

Thanks a lot for those tips. Kinda figured I'd have to use burst mode on account of the strobes...I don't really use burst much either but I guess it's the only way to go for this kind of lighting.

No 16-35L in my bag yet, so I'll just stick with my 24-70L and 35L. Been having a lot of luck with my 15mm fisheye lately too, so I'll probably pack that one as well. Probably should stock up on earplugs too. :p
