now that i have been shooting more portraits lately (for money) i wonder if i should upgrade to a FF, thinking 5dmkii. i'd like a wider FOV with my 50 and 85mm, but i could always just get a wider prime.

Would I see any significant IQ in addition over my 60D?

i can sell my 60D and my 10-22 (since it wont fit the 5D) to fund the 5D and keep all my other lenses.

should i go full frame or would i be better off just picking up a wider prime instead?

Yes it's much better. Just for the sheer fact that your lenses are rendered as they should be. If you need more reach invest in more glass later.

Too much Gear to list!

Yes, go full frame. You will see a significant improvement in IQ that will take your work up a notch. Do it.

Jim

The way I see it is, if you are doing portrait work full frame is the way to go. The 5Dc body can be had for $700-$1000 so is very reasonable investment. I've used crop bodies in small spaces which can make it challenging for group shots. Sure for head and shoulder shots the 60 will do, but it will always leave you wanting more.

If you cant realize FF and bigger is better more detail and IQ ...
realize APS is smaller and is like 1/2 frame 35 mm noise and sharpness.
The way to upgrade an APS camera is to go FF.
Replacing APS with new APS is upgrading the camera manufactures P&L.

thanks for reaffirming my suspicions, so should i go with a 5Dc or the 5D mkii?

i can get a refurbished 5dii for about $1500 through CLP. so selling my 10-22 and the 60D should get me to break even almost.

I am selling both of my 7Ds and going full frame. Bought a 5DII at a Christmas sale and really have fell in love with it. Just bought a 5DIII to have two FF bodies.

try it out with the 5dc, won't cost much and the IQ is great.

If you're shooting really low ISOs, the differences will be negligible.

That said, I prefer FF for (most) things because primes work "correctly" on FF. I hate 50mm on a cropper, as it's really no-man's land as far as FOV. 85mm works, though, as it's almost like a ~135mm.

Plus, the shallow DOF gets even more shallow with FF, and I love the isolation one can pull off using FF.

That said, watch out for going too crazy with shallow DOF, as you may find yourself needed to stop down a bit to get both eyes in focus, etc. (which has the great side-effect of rendering a sharper image, as most lenses render sharper stopped down....so, you achieve the "same" DOF effect as if you were shooting crop wide-open, but with a sharper render).

For portraits, a 5DII would be very nice...

Do not expect huge increases in IQ and all... It's not nearly as dramatic as some people make it sound. But, FF is "better"... for portraits.

However, what else do you shoot? If any of it is action/sports, it might not be a wise move to swap out your 60D. It's more of an "all purpose" camera. It can do about 90% of what 5DII can do for portraits, 110% or 120% of some other types of subjects. The AF of the 60D is superior in some ways and in particular will track movement better.

If the bulk of your shooting is stationary subjects... say if you use One Shot most of the time... then 5DII would be a very good choice. If you use AI Servo a lot, stick with what you've got.

You will need to consider add'l lenses, too, if you go to 5DII. To equal what you see with the 85mm on your 60D, you'll need a $1000 135/2L. It's a great lens, but add'l cost that you might want to plan for, if you move to FF.

5DIII is finally an "all purpose" FF camera... but at a hefty price that sounds to be well outside your budget.

i would say most of my shooting is stationary except for my kids :) if im not shooting people, im shooting landscapes.

rarely any sports. I hardly ever use AI Servo.

extra reach is something i have been coveting but i think a 70-200 will suit me just fine.

im going to take a cruise at the end of the summer and then reevaluate my lenses and body. at which time its sounds as is a FF is the way to go for me. but i'm dying to see what the 10-22 will do for some Bermuda scenery.

I have a 7D and a 5DII. I actually like them both. My main portrait lens is 5d but I do not have a problem using the 7D and I get good results.
