I always heard you should at least have one camera from each line. I've got a 300D (Rebel line), a 40D (xxD line) and a 7D. Still need to pick up a 5D3 and a 1DX.

5D2, 7D, 40D (all gripped), 24-105 f/4L, 70-200 f/2.8L IS Mk I, 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM, Sigma 8-16mm, Sigma 70-300mm

Too many cameras is the number you can't afford:)

I try not to buy an upgrade until 5 years has passed; for example, Rebel Xti to Rebel T4i. But I have bought (then sold) too many lenses :(

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

Canon T4i (2 lenses), Fuji X100s, Olympus OM-D EM-1 (3 lenses)

I've only got 2 cameras as I've only got 2 hands and I can't juggle. The wife has got 1 though and I occasionally borrow that as well, but only if I feel strong.

As far as what camera to go far, I got the wife the new 650D and it's a cracker. Great features, great IQ, great video and a really fantastic touchscreen makes it very easy to use. I've got a 5D3 and a 60D though, so I don't have to borrow her 650D very often.

I think you would appreciate the T3i and that would be my choice. CLP program to save some extra cash.

yes, or save even more with the T2i thru the CLP program

I think I would agree with this, and there are some really good deals to be found.

I kept my old 300D to use as a timelapse body. Even the ancient kit lens works fine for timelapse, so if the whole works gets stolen or knocked over or chewed on by some critter (I'm not always close by) it's not a huge deal.

The best way to upgrade is to upsize format like APS C to FF DSLR.
Dont be concerned with small tech improvements.
Camera manufactures laff all the way to bank on upgrades.

Camera manufacturers laugh all the way to the bank on any purchase or upgrade. If you buy a body with a kit lens, they know that there's a decent chance you will get one more lens. If you buy a body only, they realize that you will likely buy at least one more lens. If you buy a entry crop, they realize that someday, you might step up to a more pro body or all the way up to a full frame body. Either way, they see it as you will likely start collecting lenses soon, if not already. If you step up to a full frame body, not only did they get you with the entry price, they also realize that you are stuck with more expensive EF lenses- and overall- more lenses for them to sell to you- very pricey lenses.
I am surprised that Camera manufacturers don't urge you to register, and periodically send you a $50 coupon off the purchase of an EF lens ( or $25 off a EF-S lens ). You know- a coupon- once every six months.
