First, the unusual jumper. I have only seen a jumper hang from a line twice in my brief experience as a macro photographer, but I suspect that it would still be rare to see even if I had been doing this longer.

Here's the odd fellow on the end of a branch:

Here's the only shot I managed that was in focus of it dangling. It was pretty tough to catch it in the focal plane, because the wind was blowing it all around.

Here's one quick natural-light backyard stack of a Glassy-winged Sharpshooter before we get to the park shots:

All the rest were taken yesterday in Topanga State Park. It is the largest park within city limits in the US (located in the Northwest portion of Los Angeles).

Terrific pictures Ryan.

I was thinking you must have a 5D Mk 2 or 3 and then looked at your gear list and it is much the same as mine. I need to keep practicing.

I have MP-E 65 envy right now, like 4, 6 and 7 a lot.

Ryan, WOW! what a great set of photos. 1,2,3, 4 and 6 are my favorites. What is that in 4 (the color and detail is amazing)?

Thanks a lot, Andrew. I used to think that one requires a Mk II or better to get the best quality, and then I started noticing that a lot of my favorite macro photographers were using APS-C bodies. That forced me to accept the fact that rather than aiming for better equipment, I should focus more on my technique in both shooting and post-processing. Shifting my focus away from equipment and toward processing and technique has helped a lot. I still hope to get a Mk. III someday (it is objectively better than the 60D in almost every way, after all), but until then, I think one can squeeze a lot out of APS-C cameras.

What shutter speeds were you using for these? You still are shooting slow enough to keep at least SOME color in the background.

Rick, I think it is Ctenucha rubroscapus. I am actually a little disappointed with the experience there, because when I came upon the scene, there were two moths in the midst of mating. Unfortunately, all I had with me was the MP-E, and they were so big that even at 1:1 I could only get about 90% of one in the frame at a time. I was kicking myself for not bringing a more normal macro lens to capture both at once.

Except for that 30-shot stack, these are all shot at 1/100 and ISO 200. I have been doing that lately to maintain a little more color in the background. If I owned a 5D, I would probably even shoot at ISO400. If you're using flash and can brace your body or lens against something solid, you can go down to 1/50 without any risk of ghosting or halos.

Excellent captures Ryan.

I really am running out of superlatives to describe these.

Stunning shots, I'm impressed!

excellent series. I do notice jumpers trail a line often when on vertical walls but never seen one actually dangling.

4 and down are my favourites, the buterfly or moth portrait is really great!

Do you have a full body shot of that buterfly by any chance? I would be courious to see it.
