I've searched and can't find much about it... does anyone have a favorite medium format printer? I'd like to be able to print my own photos up to 11"x17" and even larger 13"x??" pano's, etc.. .

Any input?

Both Canon and Epson produce excellent A3+ printers.

We use an Epson R2000, capable of prints up to 13" wide.

Highly recommended for quality & speed. We also like it because it oversprays the image with a clear gloss coat, minimizing bronzing.

IS it a model that will do the pano's, say, 30-40" in width?

Basically all the Epson R2xxx and R3xxx series printers are top-notch. I have an R2400 and it's great. The width of the pano you want to print is pretty much limited by the length of the roll; which for a 13" roll is about 32 feet.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

The Epson R2880 will handle the same rolls, 329mm by 10 metres in length, basically theres no limit as far as the printer is concerned, just the availability of the paper. It does need setting up a custom paper size, but thats not over difficult.

When did they do away with the 44 inch limit? As I remember, if I set a custom panorama size beyond 44 inches, PS crashes. I haven't tried it since CS 4, though.

I use Photoshop 7 (not elements7) and its fine, I've not experienced the 44" limit you mention.

What model of printer were you using?

hmm... cool, thanks for the info, that's what I was looking for. I've had a couple of Canon printers in the past and was never overly impressed with them. I had to have a printer one night for some stuff for work, so I shot over to the local Wally World and grabbed a cheaper (under $80) all-in-one, and it produces better prints than any Canon I had in the past. I'd thought about going with the epson, and now am sure.

Thanks again!

Photoshop 7 is limited to 30.000 pixels
Photoshop CS is limited to 300.000 pixels
Might be that the limit was removed in PSCS4 or 5, not sure.

Rene,

I did not know that, thanks for the information. So at 360 ppi I can go to just over 83".

You can find Canon Pro 9000 IIs online for pretty cheap, pretty easily (I imagine them always being on rebate helps).

Hmmm. That's nice. In the past I've used (and still have about twenty feet) of Epson Ultra Premium Luster in ten inch by 100 foot rolls. It was irritating that I couldn't print longer than 44 inches at the time, and one consequence was that I stuck with an A3 printer - but maybe I'll try it again. I've been wanting a new printer. ;)

"Limited" isn't very limiting considering typical usage scenarios. I recently made a 44" x 60" @ 360dpi which is well within PS7's limits, CS's limit would let you make a print over 300 meters wide, but there isn't even roll paper that long unless you're printing a building-side banner (but then you don't 360ppi either)

If anything, the problem could be your print spooler, as windows has a nasty habit of running out of memory when you try to print massive files or a large number of consecutive prints (which then causes a crash).
It's for this reason you have programs like Qimage which do a better job of memory management and let you print any size you want. Macs seem to do a better job of print management as I've never managed to overload the spooler on them.
