also, how is the aperture set on an FD lens in this manner? i dont recall there being any change in the aperture when i tried to spin the A-ring and i know that the FD lenses have a lever that is actuated by the old film bodies...

Yeah, you'll need to release that lever before you'll be able to adjust the aperture. When off the camera, FD lenses "park" the aperture partially closed and lock it in place. I'm not sure what the idea was... maybe to preserve the springs in the aperture mechanism. Anyway, when adapted for use, if the adapter isn't designed to "unlock" the mechanism, you'll have to rig something that does.
And... There are FD to EOS adapters that have optics in them, to allow focus to infinity. In general, they are low quality optics and image quality is poor. Alternatively, there are adapters without optics that don't harm IQ, but most lenses won't focus to infinity.
Unfortunately, the FD/FL lenses are among the "worst" to adapt for use on EOS/EF mount.

That includes some info about the adapter Canon offered at one time, probably the highest quality that's ever been available... unfortunately it only works on particular lenses, it acts as a 1.26X teleconverter, it's quite rare and now is an expensive collectible. Last one I saw sell at auction went for $1200!
