I would of ask for another one if it was dropped even with a box, bubble wraps, etc and it might be fine but for the amount of money you are paying... But then I don't buy camera gear from best buy.

Saw BB is cutting 2400 (more) jobs, maybe the fellow who dropped your camera was one of those told he's out the door. In a year or two, hopefully BB will be nothing but a bad memory.

Without competition like best buy you will be paying through the nose for electronics. I don't go into best buy for advice, but they do have decent prices which all other electronic stores are forced to match.

Awesome that you seem to revel in people losing their job.

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.

Pillows are our choice of packaging rather than bubble wrap because it is proven to be the best shock absorbers for all categories of product.

Our protocol is to pack above and beyond the industry standard. Most packaging companies that come in and see our operation are taken back by the amount of pillows we use in one carton – and try everything to get our business because it is not the norm. The industry standard is to put the item in the box to one corner and then fill the void with dunnage whether it is peanuts, pillows, foam, or paper.

We instruct our packers to blanket the bottom and the sides of the box, place the item in the middle and then fold over the pillows and add more to fill the box where needed. The only thing we don’t add any pillows to are items that ship in the vendor box, and soft goods (t-shirts, backpacks, hats, etc).

All that being said, it sounds from your feedback that for some reason your package wasn't packed as it should have been, for which I can only, at this point, apologize most sincerely. If you would like to send me your order number plus a couple of pictures of the packaging then I will raise this with the DC Manager: Helen@adorama.com (external link)

This is exactly what excellent customer service is about and exactly the reason why big retailers like Best Buy will go out of business. When the camera was dropped the associate should have called a manager and switched the camera. :)

What exactly isn't in perfect shape? The corner of the box?

Maybe, would you buy a new car with a scratch on it, maybe a new house with a broken window. You should never purchase something new that has or potentially has damages. Money is hard to come by these days and prices aren't going lower.

This thread going around and around and I don't think there is one answer.

Do what you need to do. If it were me, I would have smiled and asked for another box right there. Problem is, what you don't know won't hurt you, but if you do know, what can you live with?

The minute they go out of business there will be another to take their place. Amazon is the key to driving prices lower.

I bet Amazon plays European Football with some of the stuff that they ship. I've bought books that look like they survived a tornado!

I did send you an email upon delivery, which was early Spring 2011 if memory serves me.

Aaaah...... I thought this had just happened. If it was early 2011, we've certainly seen changes in the packaging policy since then - due in no small part to the great feedback I'm able to pick up directly from our customers on forums like this.

Yeah...mine I just got last week, outer box was beat to all kinds of pieces and the inner packaging wasn't very secure, my 70-300L box has one corner totally caved in. Fortunately Canon's Lens boxes are a thing of beauty with their high density foam suspending the lens inches off of the sides of the box so everything appears to be good.

Just letting you know.. I know the outer box you can't do much about, I'm sure UPS at some point brutalized it, it was so bad that one side of the tape was nearly ripped open. The inside the lens box was directly against the side of the outer box, so whoever packed it either didn't put in enough to keep it from shifting to the side, or didn't line the box like you described above. There were a couple of other items in there too like a Hoya EVO filter that were just kind of wandering around loose. Like I said, nothing appears to be damaged though.

Can you email me with your order number so we can figure out who packed it and ensure training is up-to-speed: Helen@adorama.com (external link)
