I'm interested - wonder if it will work with the Canon FD/EOS converter? I'll have to look around and do some research.

Have Fun,

Ingenious :D

Frankly, I had considered something similar myself ... what if one of the third-party lens manufacturers (who should have the know-how about lens protocols) went into producing a MF lens adapter that tricks the camera into believing you have a genuine EOS lens in MF mode mounted to the camera.

NOINK does not need that... they didn't disable the feature for MF lenses

Best regards,
Andy

Seems like a good alternate option for the split screen focusing... or an addition to it.

I'd like to buy five of them, but the payment option provided by the seller is not acceptable. He is not a Paypal seller, and thus can't accept payments from Paypal buyers using a credit card. I'm not going to give Paypal my bank information to avoid having to use a credit card. I know from experience that sending other payments to Germany requires very high cost conversion to Euros.

I think this is a good thing for one of the guys on POTN who have a business account with Paypal to buy in quantity. I'd gladly pay a reasonable market to compensate them for their trouble.

Another option is for one of you U.S. buyers who are going to get one or two of these to get five extras, and I'll pay you for them.

But they did disable metering with MF lenses - at least on consumer bodies like D50 & D70...

I don't know what this does or how it works. I read the advert but can't see how it can work.

My take on it is that it uses the autofocus mechanism to tell you when the subject is in focus. Very helpful when using a manual focus lens, since focusing aids like a microprism are not built into the EOS cameras.

This is how it works:

When you use an EF lens in MF mode, you manually focus and - as soon as your cameras AF system deems you have reached good focus - you get an audible alert and the focusing point that has achieved focus flashes.

In order to avoid dslr users to use cheap MF lenses (M42, Noink, Contax, ...) as 'pseudo-af-lenses' with that workaround (and so avoid buying expensive Canon EF lenses), Canon intentionally disabled that feature when you are not using an EF lens (but the camera still meters).

This chip tricks the camera into believing that in reality an EF 24-70/2.8L lens is mounted to it (instead of a MF lens). So it will give you focus confirmation.

Most likely you will have to use the camera in AV mode and set to f/2.8 ... because if the camera tries to stop down the lens, you'll most likely get an ERR99 (like on some older Sigma EF lenses)

Could you explain a bit more on that ... I don't completely get it. How can metering be disabled without rendering manual lenses completely unusable?

Does the camera calculate the corresponding shutter speed when you use a manual NOINK lens at a (manually set) aperture or not?

I always thought that was one of NOINKs big selling points ... that you can use all your old NOINK lenses on the dslrs.

Best regards,
Andy

Lens compatibility with Nikon is quite complicated and it always was - probably due age of F-mount. If I remember well, you could even damage lens/body with some combinations.
To make long story short, only one body (F6) is fully compatible with everything, high-end digital bodies are compatible enough to be useful, and consumer bodies are mostly not compatible. You can mount MF lens (if it's not very old ;) ) on D50/D70, but that’s all – metering is not working therefore handheld light meter is necessary. Full compatibility chart can be found at: http://www.nikonians.org …/other/compatibility.html (external link)

IMHO, Nikon lens compatibility is even less than EOS with some adapter mount, and with cheaper bodies it's only marketing trick. If only Canon didn’t block AF confirmation with MF lenses :( ...

Thank you for that link
That is quite outrageous to me.
And I thought I once had found something that NOINK was doing better....

You are absolutely right ... if you have a lot of old NOINK lenses you want to use ... get the 350D instead of the D50/D70 on compatibility reasons alone

Andy

This is the reason that Canon changed over from the FD to the EOS EF mount in a stroke, without even trying for backwards compatability. To have tried for backward compatability (al la Nikon ) would have compromised the EOS range further down its' development and Canon were prescient enough to take the descion, take the flak and get on with making a lens mount which they KNEW would be around a long time into the future and still be capable of expansion to accomodate cameras and technologies which were yet to be thought of - foresight or what?
