I wanted to catch some fireworks over the city but night did not go as planned. Apreciate C & C of this shot.

I am no expert but to my eye it looks like the darks could be pushed up, a little more contrast and take down the highlights as the bright sections on the roofs of a couple of the buildings look blown to me. Overall it looks a bit washed out.

I took a minute or so to tweak your photo I hope you don't mind.
You could spend more time to really work it over and remove some of the noise and really work the curves to even things out a bit too.

This appears to be a HDR type image that I think is well done, although I'm not a "city skyline" fan. What I don't like is your foreground being OOF, want more DOF.
If you're using Photoshop, you may want to include "focus stacking" in your work flow, or increase your f/stop, causing you to decrease SS to maintain your existing ISO setting.

I think the edit is an improvement but may have gone a bit too far into the blacks.

I'm not sure, but is the picture over exposed?

There definitely are parts of the picture that are overexposed... but personally, I don't expect to get much detail from lights when they are directly photographed.

To me, this looks like it could have been exactly what the camera metered for; there are some parts of the image that are overexposed (lights from buildings and vehicles) and others are underexposed (deep shadow areas). From the cameras perspective, I think it's pretty good - we obviously have the ability to see a much greater dynamic range, which is why some post-processing would be needed to get this image looking its best...

I use manual exposure settings on the copy machine

I don't know much of this stuff but this is how my eyes like it in my crappy monitor. Keep is mint this is a compressed JPEG that I'm working with

4 minutes editing...

You need editing software if you want to make your photos pop!

The first image have a have lack of detail and contrast and the second one (edited) is way under exposed. Not sure what the guy tried to accomplish there...

You can still work some details on the dark's but this is just to give you an idea...

Hope that helps :P

All right I will end the guessing game. The shot was taken from the roof of Penn's new research building at 9:30 PM the night of the 4th. I was hoping to catch some fireworks in the city skyline. I had to get up for work the next day at 4:45 so I went home before they started. I guess I am getting to old to hang :)
