It's been a while since I've asked any "What should I buy?" questions, so please forgive me. First, for reference I mainly shoot landscapes, city scenes, candids and portraits.

I was thinking of dropping my current kit down to two lenses. I now have the Tamron 17-50 and 30mm f1.4 on the wide end. I'm finding I use the Tamron more than the Sigma so I was thinking of trading the Tamron and Sigma for a 17-50mm OS HSM from Sigma.

On the longer end, my go to portrait lens is the Tokina 50-135mm f2.8. I just picked up a 70-210 USM for kids sports and I am SHOCKED at how fast the USM is compared to my Tokina. I kinda want that kind of AF in my key portrait lens, too. I also have a 55-250 kicking around that I never use. So I was thinking of consolidating all three into the Sigma 50-150mm OS HSM.

So I'd end up with just the 17-50 and 50-150mm f2.8 OS HSM lenses from Sigma. I'd lose the f1.4 prime and the 250mm reach. But I would gain stabilization and faster AF as well as trimming down the kit to just two lenses.

Any thoughts? My only worry is that the 50-150 looks like a monster.

I am looking at this two lens set-up as well. I just got the Sigma 17-50 and it is really great so far. I quite like the OS. I used to have the Tamron, and it's nice to have the OS now. This seems like a nicer lens. I also have the Sigma 50mm. I'd get rid of the 50mm to bring the cost of the 50-150 down.

I agree that the only thing that would hold me back is the size. Wow. I have never had a lens that big.

I had the non-VC version on the Tamron and the slow AF speed always frustrated me. I got the Sigma 17-50 when it came out. Loved it on my 50D at the time. It was my most used lens.

The new OS version of the 50-150 is the same size as Sigmas 70-200 OS, which I have. It is sizable. If you want to find a camera bag where you can keep it mounted your choices get somewhat limited. I love my Black Rapid strap. I use the strap on the 70-200's tripod mount when shooting and it works well.

I'm finding I don't use it that much partly due to its size. I have been contemplating selling it. But then I don't know whether I'd want a prime like the Canon 135mm L or 200mm L. Or maybe skip the telephoto side completely for now. The Canon 24-105mm would be my longest focal length if I didn't get something else in the telephoto range. Although also big in size, the Canon 100-400mm seems like it would be better for me on the 5D II.

Many have the 17-55 or third party version and the 70-300 Lis

Another version would be the 15-85 and the 70-300 Lis

Thanks for the replies. I think the 50-150mm is going to be too big, which is sad because otherwise it is my ideal lens. I hate telephotos that start at 70mm for portraits.

I might look at the 70-200 f4L and 85mm f1.8 combo to replace the 50-135mm f2.8 and 70-210. But I've tried the 85mm side by side with my 50-135mm and ended up keeping the 50-135mm. I love the versatility of the zoom. Maybe I could try to find a sharp copy of the Sigma 50-150 non-OS? My Tokina is just so freaking sharp I hate to mess with it. I will probably just keep the 50-135 for portraits and 70-210 for sports and upgrade it to the F4L if I use it a lot.

So how about The wider end? Tamron 17-50 and 30mm f1.4 for Sigma 17-50mm? I am scared to lose f1.4, but I have used it literally 2 times this year.

I never sold any of my lenses, but I dropped to a 'working 2-lens set', that is, I kept all my lenses in case I need them, but got use to carrying around just the 2 I used most (17-40, and 50 1.4).

I did replace my 60mm macro and 85 f1.8 with a 100mm macro though.

Only two lenses? The horror, the horror...

I wouldn't worry about losing f1.4, if you've only used it twice it's time to move on.

Taylor, get the Sigma 17-50 and don't sweat the 1.4. Now that I have a Tokina, I know why you did not part with it when we discussed it a while back, and I think it would be a mistake for you to part with it now.
