I was just curious if you guys ever use flash outside besides for portraits and what flash compensation you usually use?

You can use the flash for many things besides ligting up one subject.. You can use then to create interesting light schemes with gels like a picture I saw of abandoned house. The author put up gelled flashes inside the rooms and took a shot getting some cool looking results..

I used them to light subject
Put it on the back of my subjects to create separation or a run light
Light up background elemets
Create interesting light with gels
Etc...

Here you can see a few examples of how I used my flashes

Background light were led lights by the DJ
But in this room I had 4 flashes going off. 3 in 3 corners of a rectangular room and one on too of my cam..
The outside shot.. One flash on too of cam and one with my assistant holding it behind the subjects..

The black and white one was just flash on the camera and the other I don't remember. Lol..

Yea that looks cool.

I guess I should just try it out on certain things and see what happens lol.

What are gels?

Colored filters for your flash units. Small plastic cutouts. They can be used to balance light in a scene, simulate sunset light, create colorful shots to your subject or backgrounds and many other things. Search color gel photography on YouTube and you will see..
