I was looking at Canon 40D sold locally and it has a little problem - the numbers in the viewfinder, such as aperture, shutter speed, etc are kind of unreadable.
I can still see the numbers just fine in the top LCD screen, so it's not that big of a deal.
My concern is that might indicate some deeper problems.

Any thoughts on the matter?

I'd pass...it's LIKELY nothing major, but there are so many 40s out there, these days, that don't have issues like that; why worry about it?

Diopter setting way off = unreadable info?

Probably this +2.

Was it unreadable (garbage) or just out of focus?

this +3

I had the same thing happen last week. Pulled camera out of bag, everything in the viewfinder was blurry, but images were perfect. Diopter was all the way one direction.

Actually, it wasn't out of focus, the numbers were garbled.

Haven't heard of that happening myself, I'd be worried then and would pass like Snyderemark said. ;)

I'm not sure what 'garbled' is... Do you mean some of the segments that make up the numbers are out so that you can't read the numbers correctly? If so, then definitely pass.. It doesn't sound like that would be an easy fix.

Yes, some numbers are missing lines and instead of "8", it might look like inverted "E", missing couple of vertical lines on the right.

Thanks guys, I think there might be other problems and I'll pass this.

I have the same problem with my 500D , which I believe I may have caused myself during cleaning with Q Tips etc? I'm not sure but everyting else works great, just a bit frustrating. Would be nice to find a fix though.

No way I could deal with that. I shoot in manual too much and use the viewfinder display constantly.
