Tomorrow I'm on a hunt to get my closest headshot yet but then I want to take some smaller mag shots as I feel I'm throwing away composition just to satiate addiction of getting closer

All top notch, great detail, compositions and colors (inc backgrounds) to die for. Top draw.

Thanks, if anyone is curious these were 600D, 100mm, 65mm of opteka extension tubes, flash with DIY soft box and taken at around ISO 400, 1/120, f/5.6 and stacked.

I'm gonna give this another go with my 60 - if they let me get close to them I will get better shots as my DIY softbox is positioned with the closer working distance in mind so the light was a bit off with these, got new batteries for faster recharge which should help with stacking, and the 60mm on extension tubes will get me bigger magnification. Ready to go.

A lovely set of shots - I think the last one is gorgeous and works very well.

I totally agree about photographers almost being obsessed with higher mag shots at the expense of composition and full body shots in their natural environment. It is wonderful to see such amazing detail but we shouldnt forget the rest of the subject ;)

I'm purposefully not going to take my extension tubes with me. I really like getting close but (personally) want to stay in photography rather than microscope work (e.g. filling a frame with the eye would be interesting but I'd rather get a well composed shot of the whole body with some interesting ambient light)

e.g.

I see - well that is down to individual taste I guess. The shot in the above link is ok but doesnt do a great deal for me really.
