So yesterday at a wedding shoot, at the beginning of the day no less, my 430ex simply stopped putting out flash. The ready light wouldn't turn green (or any color) but the pilot light was lit red. So it just doesn't flash.

Cut to a few hours later (I was using it solely for the AF-assist at this point which still was functioning) and it suddenly starts working normally again. A few flashes later and failure again.

It's now a day later and it's in the same state as it was as described in the first paragraph above. I do notice that if I cup my hand a tiny flash is emitting when I fire it, but it's basically zero.

Further notes: the flash does not make the recharge sound when I turn it on, though it does buzz (high frequency) a little as flashes tend to do.

I've cleaned the contacts on the camera's hotshoe + the flash itself, though it's a moot point if it won't fire when pressing the pilot light button when off camera. I've changed batteries for ones I know work.

Finally: I obviously have backup equipment and the wedding went very well. Still there is this slight annoyance that this, my second 430ex seems to have perished in the process.

Any ideas ?

I know you said you swapped batteries but, did you try fresh batteries or were they rechargeables? I have had almost identical issues with a 550EX which taught me a lesson about shelf life of various batteries.

Both sets were charged the night before and both sets functioned all night in different flashes.

most likely a dead capacitor since the flash doesn't make the whining sound. If the flash does make a whining sound, then the flash tube is broken and you will still need to send it in for repair.
