One of my old and trusted 40ds finally broken down a few weeks ago. I sent it to a canon authorized repair shop and was told the mirror 'shaft' (i guess the part that holds the mirror) is broken and it will take 170 to repair. It will cost an additional 70 to replace the shutter (it already has 100k on it). Here are options:

1) Sell for parts - not sure how much I can get for it? $50? $100?

2) Trade the broken 40d to canon for a 5d2? It will cost about 1400+tax and I have been planning to pick one up later this year. Will price drop further in a few months? Also not sure if the 40d is eligible, does anyone know?

3) Repair it. But I already have another 40d with <20k on the shutter that I can use.

What should I do?

If you were planning on sticking with the 40D, I'd say just have the repair done; but if you were already going to make the move to the 5D2 and can get it for $1400 on a trade-in, I'd just take it as an early upgrade option :)

I just contacted canon, the discount on a 5dmk2 is only 10% (1759-10%), and its 20% for all other cameras. At that price I would rather get a used 5d2 body for ~1500.

Was the 10% quote on a standard refurb 5D2 or one via the CLP?

If you're happy with the 40D, I'd just spend the money to repair it. I'm not sure what you shoot, but the smart money options for upgrade would be either the 5D2 or the 7D.

For CLP, any broken camera made by Canon will do. Film, P&S, DSLR, anything - they're all "worth" the same discount.

So the 40D would cost approximately $240 to repair? They still sell more than that on the used market, at least around here.

400 or so is the average going rate, I'd think that a repaired 40D with essentially new internals could sell for 500.

Which makes it potentially worth the repair, even if you just turn right around and sell it. Good catch.

Yeah, for me the math always comes down to whether I would buy one for the repair costs. If a 40D with new shutter box showed up on the local craigslist for $240 I would grab it even though I dont use the one I have that often.
