Is this an issue worth returning a lens over?

I just got the 40mm Pancake, and it was the only one in the area. It is a little rough mounting it to my 5D Mark II, and I'm worried it may be something I should return it over. It takes a bit of force to mount it to the camera. Curious if I should just take it back.

It shouldn't take any force to mount it.... I'd examine things to see what the problem is... then send it back.

^^yeah...a lens should rotate on and lock without any real force being applied. Check you camera lens mount and the mount on the lens for damage; but, it should, likely go back for a new one.

I've never had another lens take any force before, and this one doesn't look any different on the mount either.

Some lenses are a bit tighter than others in the mount. My new EF 40mm is a bit tighter than most of my other lenses too. My EF 50mm f/2.5 takes quite a bit more force than other lenses.

Does it take a lot of force or feel like it is grinding, or just a bit tighter than your other Canon lenses?

I'm assuming you bought this used..? Or low stock in your local stores. Whichever the case is, you want your life to be as easiest as possible, don't make it any harder by keeping a lens that requires more work when it shouldn't have to.

Macroimage, It's definitely rougher than any lens I've mounted on any camera before. It doesn't grind, but it does take some effort to put on whereas all my other lenses are nice and smooth.

Edit: Zero, I bought it new at Best Buy. It was the only one within 30 miles of my house in Houston.

If you bought this new at retail then I highly recommend you return it. I don't suggest you buying from BB/FS anyway, they jack up their prices like crazy. Or possibly go for an exchange? They should be restocking soon.

Lens is $199.99 everywhere right now. In the 40mm thread, several users have reported it is stiff to mount. I may go to one of the local camera stores tomorrow and see if they are any different.

It seems like the only people telling you to return it are the ones who do not own this lens.

The 40mm seems to be a unique lens in that all copies I tried (3) were stiff to mount, as are countless others owned by people around the world.

I don't see this as being a problem, it's not like you have to really muscle it on. It simply takes a tiny bit more effort to mount/unmount, which I think is a good thing, since hopefully it'll lead to fewer dropped lenses.

Interesting thread. I have a 60D which I generally use with a Canon 15-85. My son has a newly acquired T3i which he uses with his Tamrom 18-270 PZD. I swapped lenses with him the other day to try some something and I noted that when attaching the 15-85 to his camera, the action was very stiff and i at first thought he lens mount was somehow misaligned. Mounting the Tamron to his camera was very smooth. Although it now mounts to the T3i a little more smoothly, the 15-85 still feels a bit stiff when locking it in. It mounts fine on my 60D. I have no idea what the cause was.

I wouldn't really worry about it. If you look around, most people say it is stiff at first, but it should loosen up after you put it on and take off a few times.

Mine was very tight when I first got it a couple weeks ago. Since then, it has loosened up when mounting on 5d and t2i. I was initially concerned about a slight yellowish color compared to by 35f/2 and 17-55 f2.8, but only notice it now if I am directly comparing lenses. Probably due to manufacturer sample variance, and dont know if made in Malaysia makes a difference, but still going to keep it.

... I'd return it and get another. Why aggrivate yourself and risk damage to the camera itself? Not worth it !

Mine's fairly stiff.

(ba-dum--pshh)

Seriously though, I wouldn't worry about it. Mine loosened up a little, but is still a little more resistant than most my other lenses.
