This image was originally taken with an Olympus 0M1 and two Vivitar 283 flash guns in a darkened room, with the shutter opened on Bulb an airgun pellet was then fired through the light bulb hitting a copper mechanical trip switch positioned about a one foot to the right of the bulb which was connected to the flash gun making it fire, the shutter was then closed. I recently scanned the 8''x10'' print and tweaked a little in PS7.

Awesome. I really like the frozen time. Plus shows how a bullet works, goes in small hole and comes out large hole.

Outstanding capture. I've always wanted to give this a try, but the rigging of the flashguns always seemed to be a massive pain. How hard was it to set up the relay?

You don't need a relay for this shot, as quadphoto said its done with a mechanical switch. when the pellet hits it makes a contact. so you have two pieces of copper strips and using older 283 vivitar flash guns. these use a pc cable conection, make up a special lead 2 wires in a pc lead each wire is soldered to each strip and other end has the pc connection for the flash. touch the two copper strips together and the flash fires.
the point at which it fires is controlled by the distance you set up that switch.
cover the face of one strip with card this will absorb the pellet.

I should mention Quadphoto is a good mate and we did some work together with this set up. he has some tremendous high speed flash pictures.
the rest of the set up I shall leave to him. even using a polaroid back for test shots. digital would be so much easier for the tests.

Quadphoto this looks great on here well done, good to see this again.

Fantastic shot! I'm really impressed and there is just so much information in the shot.

This sounds a similar setup to what I used to capture my 'Cherry Splash' image in the 'Experimental' section ( http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=119757 ). This was taken some time ago on my Oly OM40 open on 'bulb', again in a darkened room only I had to fire the flash by hand after a countdown as I did not have a trigger mechanism. One roll of film later, I had two useable photo's. Fortunately, I could wipe down the glass between shots and use it again, not something you could do with this lightbulb!

Like you, I scanned my 8x10 with a subsequent clean, resize and slight sharpen for the web.

Mgdh, just had a look at your 'Cherry Splash' image very good, at the time that i took the exploading light bulb image I also took photo's of exploading balloons and crowns formed from milk droplets using a sound trigger that i made, it was great fun at the time and i am thinking of having a go at it all again using Digital.
