HI all

Have had a seriously broken Canon 550d sitting in my room for about 5 months now. Made lots of inquiries about fixing it and was quoted more than the cost of a new one. I then tried to go in myself and then managed to make more of a mess, so now it is at the point of no return. Before I bin it should I keep any parts that I could use in the future?...strap, camera cap, eyepiece....these three I will keep but just wondered if there is anything else I should do before I chuck it. Thanks in advance!

Richard

I'd put it up on ebay "Spares only" with clear disclaimers. Someone could use the parts for repairing or some photo project. The battery is worth a bit even the the CDs, instructions, strap etc. are worth something.

Also Canon has a program that takes in Broken/Old cameras and give you discounts on Refurbished goods I am not 100% on how it works someone more in the know will chime in .

Thanks for the responses. I live in Japan so selling online or sending anywhere is out really. Also I don't want to buy a new camera.

they don't take up much space, keep it around. you never know what creative project it might come in handy for down the road.

I agree with Rick. If I really had the need to throw it in the bin, before I did though, I would take off things like the battery door, and hot shoe mount, basically anything removable with a small screwdriver.

I'll pay for the shipping if you want to send it to me.

Is there an issue selling second hand goods in Japan?

If so there must be tons of fab stuff being thrown away - you could gather up all the old canon stuff you can your hands on and ship it over to the UK to be sold by someone here :)

I think I would be more inclined to keep it, for parts, CLP trade-in, etc. But I'm one of those junk collectors

Several people have mentioned that I send it to them. Just so you know....it was originally broken because I dropped it in the ocean and then 5 months later the flash stopped working. I then sent it to Canon who said there was rust inside and despite it being only 8 months old it was buggered and the warranty was void. I then took it to some shops here and they said it would be very expensive to fix. I then opened it up myself and accidently ripped one of the important bits chip things that connects ( its soldered on ) I'm now getting confused....anyway I did terrible things to this camera! Regarding selling used / old stuff in Japan...Tokyo yes there are loads of shops...I live in Okinawa which is a small island miles away from anywhere. Not so easy! Anyway thanks for the responses! I just really wanted to know if there were any bits I should try to keep that aren't so obvious before I put it out of its misery. Thanks
