I recently purchased a 7D and an EF-S 18-200 3.5/5.6 IS lens. After taking a few photo's I am not sure I chose the right lens. The photo's don't seem to be sharp enough to me. I have been shooting digital for a number of years and also have a 5DII and a 1DIIN with several L lenses. I chose the 7D for its 1.6 crop factor to be used for shooting wildlife and birds mainly. The 18-200 lens was going to be just a general lens for everyday use. I am looking for suggestions based on your actual useage for a better option.

Thanks
Wayne

what L lens do you have and why don't you just use them on the 7D???

if that's what you've been using, why did you get the 18-200 in the first place which clearly is inferior to what you already have?

If you just want a general walk around lens..why would you go for the 18-200 when you could have gone for a much better quality 24-105L ? Not as much reach but certainly a difference in IQ - you sacrifice that when you go for such a huge range difference like the 18-200.

The 7d is a high megapixel camera, and needs a good quality lense to resolve enough detail. An 18-200 is mediocre at best. You'd be better of buying a 70-200 f4 L non IS for example, if you want to shoot wildlife. An even better, but more expensive option would be the 100-400 L.

This would be my question, as well.

Additionally, have you done any setup with the custom menus for the 7D? The default, out of the box settings aren't necessarily the best for good results.

You may, also, find that a little bit of micro-focus adjustment may be needed to get the most out of your lenses with this guy.

i like the 15-85 on my 7D as a general, wander around lens. I alternate between it and 70-200 2.8ii.

General purpose lens depending on need;

15-85 is a great lens for all around use.

17-5(x) f/2.8 if you need the larger aperture.

Likely you already have a 24-105 L that should have come with your 5D II so slap that on and box up the 18-200

+1
The 18-200 is an OK compromise if you want an all-in-one lens as a light travel option, but ultimately it's just that, a compromise between convenient range and optical quality. You'll get better optical performance from a lens that's not a superzoom.

I have the 15-85 and while its decent, you might find better IQ with the 24-105L. You lose some on one end and gain it on the other. I probably going that route myself soon.

On the 7d for BIF, I had get good IQ, with the 70-300L, 300 f/4L and the 200 f/2.8L or 70-200 f/4L IS (at a pinch).
You need to keep the shutter speed up higher than you would with the full frame due to the pixel density

Thanks for your replies. Just want to mention that I already have telephoto lenses as well as the 24-105 for my 5DII. Again, I am looking for a good general everyday lens just for the 7D.

The 17-55 f/2.8 and the 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 are designed as the crop-sensor analogs to the 24-70 f/2.8L and 24-105 f/4L, respectively. Generally speaking you can pick either one depending on whether you need the fast f/2.8 or you want the longer focal range. Both are optically excellent.

I use my 24-105L most of the time. Great all-around lens.

The 24-105 works great, on the crop body, for a general purpose lens, IMO
