I was shooting a music festival recently and got chating to one of the other photographers. He was shooting Nikon but I noticed he had a very old looking lens on his relativelty new D700. I asked about it and he said it's one of the worst lenses Nikon has ever made because it flares like hell, but for selective shots at a festival/concert it allows you to get some really nice effects from the stage lighting.

So my question to you, is what EF mount lenses have you used that flare like crazy that might allow me to produce something a bit different than I can on my L lenses at the next festival.

Wait, you WANT it to flare? That's easy, find the cheapest filter you can, and put it on your lens :)

My 50mm 1.4 can flare quite a bit from indirect sunlight, but not sure what stage lights would do to it.

Yep, you got it. I've got plenty of lenses which are technically great and can get me the high quality shots I need. Just after something to compliment those shots, giving images with a bit more character.

You can make almost any lens flare, if you try hard enough... 24-70/2.8:

Or move just slightly and reduce the flare a lot:

The 50/1.8 is pretty subject to veiling flare. It's more susceptible than the 50/1.4.

The Tokina 11-16/2.8 is also known to flare pretty easily (at least the first version does, there's a new "Mark II" coming out that might reduce that a bit).

If you want to cause special flare effects... look at the Cokin filter system, among others. There are all sorts of filters that can add a variety of effects.

Also, I recall there is even a software to add flare to images in post-production... But I forget what it's called.

Tokina 11-16...I've had that lens flare more than any other one I've ever owned. (Great lens otherwise, though haha)

Adding a cheap filter to any lens will give you flare. :-)
