Reason:

- I'm an event photographer looking for a second body and thinking of buying 7D (Don't want to swap lenses during an event)
- 35L on 7D isn't wide enough for me, but 24 will do the job.
- If need arises I can put 24LII on 5DIII and have more width to work with.

Do you guys think its a good idea?.. I haven't had any experience with 24LII, is it a good overall lens in terms of sharpness and other issues?

Absolutely no problems with sharpness. It's good wide open and stunning by f/2.8. Has a bit of vignetting wide open (what lens doesn't?) and minimal distortion. I've been delighted with mine this past year and I'm sure you won't regret getting one.

they're both very good, if you want the 24 by all means go for it. if it's not your cup of tea, good lenses are easy to sell.

The type of events you shoot will be the decision factor along with your style.
Now, why a crop camera? with the 5D3 you are well covered, and aside using the same battery type, is it the "extra" reach you looking for?
Why not consider then a 5Dc or 5D2?
You could go with a 16-35II and a 5Dc;
or TS-e 24mmII;
or a Zeiss 21mm...

I would keep the 35L - just my 2 cents

I realize that prime vs zoom is kind of religious :-)
But, since I have 24L, 35L, and 85L as well as zooms from 16-35L through 70-200L I think I can say that for events, the zooms offer me a better kit.
I also had a 7D along with my 5DIIs. Now I have 5DIII and 5DII.
The full frame vs crop is more important to me. I know how the lenses work on Full frame, the DoF on smaller sensor is different along with the angle of view.

I tend to do all my events with zooms and use the primes for creative reasons for other work.

So, my vote is another full frame body for backup.

30 years ago I carried multiple cameras with different FL lenses because that was necessary. Now zooms are much better, especially for events.

The 24 is magical just as the 35 is....I just sold my 35 to fund other things...pick your focal length and enjoy

Nikon D850 and a bunch of stuff, I have learned a lot here when I was shooting Canon, staying to keep learning..."Every time I set up I learn something new".

:rolleyes: .. maybe it's a kind of religion ... but, in my case, for 30 years, since I got a A1+85L, every attempt I made to use zoom, I felt too much frustration as soon as light is a little bit weak (which means indoor, early morning, evening ans nights) impossible to freeze any moving subject !.

Actually, I found 2 combos to cover nearly all my needs (mainly action/sport) 1DMKIII+5DMKII and 24L+85L+300L2.8 .. just 180L is used for macro purpose.

Unfortunately there is no zoom to cover 24-100 F1.8 .. and Canon didn't make the right choice with 5DMKIII with such anemic dynamic and pixeks numbers.
I just hope right now, that Canon will as soon as possible be able to join the high end affordable Sony sensors .... or In one or two years I will swap.
