OK, so I got in on the SlickDeals deal for a Samsung 830 128GB SDD for $90. I also received shipment of the Sandisk Extreme 120GB SDD just today. I've got the 240GB Sandisk Extreme SSD coming to me tomorrow.

I keep on reading that the Samsung is super reliable. The Sandisk gets very good reviews, but it's using the Sandforce controller.

This drive will be used for my main editing PC.

Question:

Which would you use as your system drive? Samsung or Sandisk?

Smaller one = OS, larger one = cache/catalog. There's probably a 5% difference in it, don't worry about it, they're both much faster than a hard disk. Make sure you back up EVERYTHING important onto a spinning disk, including an OS image.

Actually, I meant to ask which brand for the OS. All told, I'll have the following:

  • Sandisk Extreme 120GB
  • Sandisk Extreme 240GB
  • Samsung 830 128GB.
I'll be using the smaller one for the OS/Apps, and larger one for photo editing.

Just wanted to know if there was an opinion on whether to use the Sandisk 120GB or Samsung 830 128GB for the OS drive with regards to track record and reliability. I've read that the Samsung are very reliable (does not use the Sandford Controller) but there's nothing to indicate that the Sandisk ones aren't reliable according to user comments/reviews.

I'll use one of the 2 smaller drives in an older laptop for the wife.

I really don't think it makes much difference. I have two Sandforce based SSDs, they've been going strong for a year or so I guess.

Put the prettiest one into your wifes laptop! Or do it based on benchmarks.

OK, do I decided to put the Sandisk 120GB in my wife's laptop. It's a Core2Duo laptop that's been showing its age.

Holy smokes...it feels like a brand new laptop and for what she uses it for, the SSD just gave it another few years I think! :)

Yeah an SSD really does make things fly, especially on machines that don't have much RAM or a slow disk.

Just picked up the Sandisk 240GB. There are great reviews (on all of these SSD's) on storagereview.com

The Sandisk appears to be the winner vs the Samsung 830s. Regardless, from every review I've been able to find, both of these drives are going to be winners.

Personally, I am almost giddy to feel the difference between my current setup (Core 2 Duo 2Ghz, 7200rpm HDD, 2GB RAM) and my soon to be new setup ( i7 3610, Sandisk 240GB SSD, 16GB RAM)...Lightroom 4 is going to change from foe to friend when this arrives.

samsung's has been proven extremely reliable as it has been out since aug 2011. sandisk's relatively new (feb 2012) so there's no long history to determine the reliability yet.

In general, I am reading better reviews about the Samsung but that could be because SanDisks haven't been out in the market as long. But I'd go with the Samsung for the OS and applications.
