And they claim 5D Mark III has a poor dynamic range.

As most have already mentioned, it is not that the 5DIII has poor dynamic range, it is the fact that the Nikon D800 Sony sensor is just ridiculously good when it comes to pulling out shadows!

The ability to "save" an image is not the textbook definition of "Dynamic Range"

DR = The camera's ability to resolve as many shades between 255,255,255 (featureless white) and 0,0,0 (featureless black) as possible in one frame...

That's exactly what I thought.

 Yeah, most people store images on hard drives nowadays. Who wants to waste paper? ;)

That's cause most of those peoples images are not worth printing! :p

But you take some of Julian's exceptional images, either Color, or B&W, esp the B&W ones, process them uisng Silver Efex Pro II (I believe that's what it's called), and they're just begging to be printed on quality metallic paper for the whole world to see!

All this DR comparison talk just sounds like another pissing contest to me!

I don't think anyone said the 5D3's DR is crap... but at low ISOs, the D800 is definitely better. Honestly, unless you need the better low-ISO DR and the higher MPs, the 5D3 wins in every other respect.

The 5D3 is the better camera if one knows how to use it.;)

Both will only perform as good as the person using them.

No problem, Julian...most well deserved!

What photo did you order printed on metal/aluminum, and how big?

This board needs a new emoticon: "Print Worthy"

If you have sufficient DR, you shouldn't have to "pull" or "push" anything...

In a perfect world, a camera could capture 1,1,1 to 254, 254, 254 in a linear fashion without the need to apply curves, contrast, highlight recovery or open the shadows.

As was mentioned above, the reality is a big fat "S" curve where shadows begin to register fairly late and highlights run out of Schlitz well before you hit total data saturation.

HDR exists because cameras don't have enough DR

HDR (the tone mapping portion) exists because your reproduction media doesn't have enough dynamic range. "Single shot HDR" gives an example of this.

I tried a DR test on the 7D, but I don't follow this much or know how to really deal with this situation.

Here is a shot that pegged the histogram nearly at both ends of the graph. Then pushing curves a bit in the raw, and then rest of the way with photoshop, I tried to get everything exposed nicely.

Does this look good? The crop is from the lower left corner. I don't know how to best process an image that has a wide range of exposure across the histogram.

Just hit the link. ;) I'm starting off at 20 x 30 but, I know for certain that I can print larger than 40 x 60. It's a test run to see what a metal print is like. :)
