I am in need of a 50 1.4. The cheapest I see it is $369. and I'll do it if I have to -- but I can wait awhile, too. (I don't buy used lenses, so this is it.)
ACK -- title should have read: "Are WE anticipating . . ."

The 50mm f/1.4 is on "rebate" right now which means retailers are forbidden from advertising it cheaper than a fixed price. You MAY have some success waiting until after the rebate ends.

Jul 10, 2012 13:42 | #9 Thanks -- I didn't know about the rebate. I'll wait a bit yet . . . and, yes, I DO have the 1.8, but I lost the AF on that a few years ago and it's not much use to me now (though I will say that it does take amazing pics, so great for still-life, flowers, etc.) Kristin

Jul 10, 2012 23:11 | #11 Well, it literally fell apart in my hands and I had to put it back together. I just don't want to deal with that possibility again (esp. with clients.) I might as well spend a couple hundred more and get an amazing quality (that rivals the L, from what I've heard), faster AF, is more heavy-duty, and even faster aperture. Kristin

Just looked at Amazon and it has many positives but focusing in on the lesser ratings they all sing the same tune of the AF being problematic.

Jul 11, 2012 15:39 | #14 Oh, I have not read that at all. The 50, from what I hear, is very close to the 35 (which I have) in build quality. I've never head of it falling apart in 2 pieces in your hands as I've heard about 1.8 doing over and over again. (Not to mention totally losing its AF.) I think the 1.4 is a much better risk in the long run (and, believe me, I love the 1.8 and defend it. If you can't afford the other, it is definitely the way to go.) Kristin

I imagine they are pretty good quality, optics wise, though! I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."
