I am in need of a 50 1.4. The cheapest I see it is $369. and I'll do it if I have to -- but I can wait awhile, too. (I don't buy used lenses, so this is it.) :)

ACK -- title should have read: "Are WE anticipating . . ."

Too bad it's not like computer sales because back to school time normally has great sales.

I couldn't sell mine here for $325, like new. I wound up putting it on Ebay for that and sold it in 5 minutes..

The 50mm f/1.4 is on "rebate" right now which means retailers are forbidden from advertising it cheaper than a fixed price. You MAY have some success waiting until after the rebate ends.

There's always the 50/1.8 that's pretty cheap. Something to hold you over until the big sales during the holidays. Could always sell the 1.8 on CL later.

Thanks -- I didn't know about the rebate. I'll wait a bit yet . . . and, yes, I DO have the 1.8, but I lost the AF on that a few years ago and it's not much use to me now (though I will say that it does take amazing pics, so great for still-life, flowers, etc.) :)

If you need the AF and the 1.8 works then buy another because for the price it's practically disposable.

Well, it literally fell apart in my hands and I had to put it back together. I just don't want to deal with that possibility again (esp. with clients.) I might as well spend a couple hundred more and get an amazing quality (that rivals the L, from what I've heard), faster AF, is more heavy-duty, and even faster aperture. :)

Consumer spending reports just in and they're "disappointing". I think we'll see very aggressive sales this fall as the lead up to the holiday season.

I read the AF/Build Quality on the 1.4 was cheap as the 1.8 which is what drove me to the 1.8 being cheaper to dispose and buy new rather then send out for repairs. Just looked at Amazon and it has many positives but focusing in on the lesser ratings they all sing the same tune of the AF being problematic.

Oh, I have not read that at all. The 50, from what I hear, is very close to the 35 (which I have) in build quality. I've never head of it falling apart in 2 pieces in your hands as I've heard about 1.8 doing over and over again. (Not to mention totally losing its AF.) I think the 1.4 is a much better risk in the long run (and, believe me, I love the 1.8 and defend it. If you can't afford the other, it is definitely the way to go.)

I've seen inside the 'Flimsy Fifty' as I call the 50 1.4, and I dont want one.... I imagine they are pretty good quality, optics wise, though!

Look up jammed focus on the 50 1.4... pad it carefully. ;)

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."
