Using Flash for Macro

While I have a macro lens I have not used it that much. I was thinking about getting a flash to use with it to reduce the need for a tripod all of the time. For those of you who use a flash with your macro shots how do you like it? Do you prefer natural lighting to flash? Thank you.

natural lighting I think tends to look better, UNLESS you find a good way to diffuse the light coming off the flash. Even the Macro flashes (ring flash and MT24) do great for lighting the subject, but can be incredibly harsh. Some of the users here have VERY creative ways of building a diffuser for their flash and the results are spectacular. LordV I believe even has a little blog about how he did his, and he's one of the best IMO. I would do a quick search for him and you'll be able to see what I'm talking about.
