Would flash have helped?

I took photos of a baptism at church this Sunday, see here:

Would my on camera flash on my T2i or a 270 flash have helped (especially the individual head shots, they seem dark to me)? Would I need a bigger flash to achieve a better look? All photos were with T2i, Sigma 17-50 2.8, no flash.

Yes flash would have helped by quite a lot. You could have dropped to 1-2 stops below ambient, gotten properly exposed faces, overpowered the ambient for easier color balancing, and still maintained a somewhat flash free look.

Fill in flash to get rid of the shadows on their faces

A little fill flash would help (if it was off camera), but these could easily be improved and give the same affect as fill flash using LR or PS.

A hotshoe flash would be prefered over the onboard unit as the onboard is prone to redeye.

Thanks! I went to Picasa and added fill light and then re-uploaded the photos. I need to download LR and learn how to use it!

I think they look better. yes, learning Lightroom is good, yes, and learning to use flash, yes!!

Direct sun is usually not a good option.
