rant on-
Made my first attempt last night at purchasing a lens. Sent the buyer a PM within an hour of the listing asking for a total price including fees as he was asking for gift payment. A few minutes later I sent a second PM asking how old the lens was. I got a response to the second question almost immediately, so I asked again for a total and said I'd like to get the lens.

Never got a response and I don't know if the lens was sold. It would be nice to know so that I can move on with either another purchase or just save my money.

I hope this isn't the norm when it comes to making purchases through the site. :(

And you still expected the seller to be honest and forthright?

Probably a good thing it fell through.

Sadly there are scammers everywhere, and there isn't any really any good way to police them here.

well its not at all uncommon for the threads to be asking for gift payment. I will not do that so I just ask what the total cost will be. in fact if you look at 10 threads, I'd say at least 6 have a gift payment price.

Yeah, and that is what put them off. Probably saved you a lot of grief. A scammer will insist on gift payment, so you can't reclaim your money, wanting to pay the fees and avoid gift just really spoils their day.

Personally, I would avoid any seller wanting the payment sent as "gift". It's fraud to do that (as you have to make a false declaration to paypal in order to not pay the fees that they are due) so any seller wanting to use a fraudulent payment method, which gives you no protection, is probably not someone with the highest standards of ethics. Avoid !!

Time to move on. Avoid this one. I don't believe this is the norm here.
