It is a fantastic camera, I can't say enough good things about it. My guess is that if you get it, your 5D2 will see a lot less use.

I use my 5D2 99.999% of the time. I only use the 1D3 for sports/action or when I feel bad that I am not using it. It's ALMOST not worth me having anymore, almost. I still really need it for shooting my friend's taekwondo and MMA fights. If only the 5D3 was 8fps, alas :(

I know exacly how you feel. I also use my 5d2 a lot but when a bird comes flying overhead I wish I had something faster (frame rate).

I lost control of my senses this morning and purchased the 1d mkIII. Expected delivery date of 7-30-2012. I'm looking forward to that date. Thanks everyone for your responses. Every reply was just absolutely valuable in making my decision.

You'll love it .... I did the exact same and replaced my primary 50D for the 1D3. Now I only use the 50D for the extra 6mp haha

Unfortunately Canon deemed it "in spec"

:( :( :(

I agree aswell with all of your comments. My 1dmk3 was sent to Canon for inspection and due to mirror assembly replacement.

10mp was a handicap aswell. The more I used it the more I felt it lacked forgiving exposure and barely acceptable high ISO performance. I still cant get over how anyone would think that the ISO 3200 performance is stellar and remotely close to a 5dmk2. ISO 1250 was my borderline acceptance to the 1dmk3.

Since I've traded the camera instead of selling to a potn/fm member I dont have any reason to hold back my personal truths/experiences about the body. I'd perhaps hold back if I knew a purchaser reading my comments on a public forum about a camera I've sold.

My old 50D seemed more forgiving but I just had to massage the files a tad more to improve the IQ. The 1dmk3 's IQ is similar to the 5dc but not as good as the 5dmk2. I must have had a bad copy but my friends 1dmk3 I've tested must also be bad??? Either some people have more tolerance or I'm just particular??? My friend that owns a 1dmk3 feels its honestly "nature of the product" .

If I never owned a 5dc or 5dmk2 I would not have had a benchmark to go against.

If 10MP doesn't work for you, there is no point in even considering it. Its not a handicap, you would have to be baka to intentionally buy something which doesn't work for your needs.

you know you can set the camera for lower frame rate right?

Honestly I think it's very good body. Yes, the ISO is about 1 stop better on 5D2 but the AF is incomparable. 1D3 runs circles around 5D2...

???

All Alan was saying is that retrospectively evaluating the camera they purchased (in hindsight), he felt 10MP was a limitaton. It doesn't imply that the poster deliberately set out to purchase a camera that did not suit his needs and I felt was relevant to answering the OP's question of how good the 1D3 is compared to modern cameras?

Took mine out yesterday and walked around town shooting urban art. It felt so good in the hand and I had forgotten what a joy it is to use it. Here are a few of shots I took. They are straight out of the camera Jpegs with no post processing done. I think this camera has a lot of life left in it.

Yes I understand japanese :)

I really tried so incredibly hard to love the camera. It just doesn't deliver sooc unless you work the file.

The 7D to 1dmk3 comparison has been beaten to death. My opinion is that both bodies delivers a wonderful experience but does not really deliver in IQ. The 5dmk2 feels clunky in comparison but the IQ has consistency that delivers. The 5dmk3 on the other hand is extremely expensive out of the 3 bodies mentioned but it delivers IQ, incredible AF and more than suitable fps (what a machine!!).

When my 1dmk3 landed the shots it was quite good but it seemed like it took more work to land the shots. Events photography sometimes its a "nice to have " more MP so you can crop and massage the composition. For product shots and headshots the 1dmk3 would work since the luxury of time will be on your side.

After taking thousands of (static/slow moving) photos with my newer tech micro 4/3 olympus OM-D camera I find the "non dslr" body to have superior files over the 1dmk3. The question "too old?" I would say the 1dmk3 is a tool with life in it. We are much more critical these days. The 1dmk3's photos taken with long tele lenses concentrating on a subject with no cropping can provide great files. 10mp in this day and age is showing its age since we see more MP's to play with these days. Heck my xti with 5 layers of dust is 10mp.

Jon_doh, please analyse your AF. You may have a copy that is plagued with a bad mirror assembly. The examples you've displayed are not in focus.

:)Alan, my autofocus is fine. It's been checked out; mine is the blue dot post fix version. As I said in my post, these shots are straight out of the camera with no sharpening applied, plus they were shot at f4 for a shallow depth of field.

The files come out of this camera in pretty good shape and don't require a lot of post processing. That's one of the things I like about this camera is that I spend a lot less time on the files working them than I do with other Canon's I've owned or Nikons I've used. I would love to work some 1DX files and see how they do

PP, thanks.

Pork, you'll be very happy with it, most cameras are way ahead of the users capabilities.
Many years ago I remember a very famous internationally known wedding photog delivering very large and superb IQ prints with his 20D. Better in fact than many out there today with better and more advanced bodies.

yes the equipment is a large part of an equation but remember this
Beginners look for equipment, pros look for the light".

Good luck with the new body.
