one of these was shot with a 20D, the other with a 1DIII.

I was on the plane editing photos for submitting to editors.

You know what they cared about, the surfers marketability not the camera.

I actually forgot which camera I was using while editing...

Look at the amount of grain in the right side of #2, Don't notice it unless you are pixel peeping, but it is there. On a bright sunny day like that, I'd bet the ISO was pretty low and if it is showing noise on a lower ISO then it is probably the 20D. #1 overall just looks cleaner and sharper. Both are awesome shots and worthy of printing.

I guess my only point is that it is obvious that the 20D is a really old camera, but it still works in professional use and its absurd to think that a newish 1D series camera is "too old". If it writes files to a card its worth it.

I think the same way about the Rebel XT. I remember someone how was shooting motorsports for a living using one and his shots were astonishing.

I received my 1dmkIII... all I can say is OMG! This is my first fully professional body and I love the feel of it. Wouldn't you know it...a cloudy day...completely overcast...here in Southern California. I'm taking it to work anyway and hope it clears by this afternoon.

Thanks everyone for a lively thread.

I'm excited to see someone else landing around the same time as me (I'm in week 3). It really is an amazing camera, and I can only imagine the joy of those with a MkIV or X.

I was looking at MkIII settings threads and came across this helpful guide (external link). I chose two scenarios that cover my most commonly shot sports (soccer and swim), and registered their settings. We'll see how close they come to what really works for me, but it's a great document anyway, just for the practical explanations of the settings.

Pork,

test the 1dmk3 with both primes and zooms. My 1dmk3 worked well with zooms but for some odd reason it severely backfocused with primes. I had the mirror assembly replaced under warranty.

waterrockets thanks but my browser had some issues with the link. I'll find the original webpage and check it out.

AlanU I have the 17-40 f4L, 24-105 f4L IS, 300 f2.8L non-IS, 300 f4L IS and plan to check MFA on all of them. Thanks for that advice.

Did your unit backfocus even after AF microadjustment? or was it simply out of range? I also noticed that lenses that required significant AF adjustment on the 1D MarkIII were nearly spot-on when used on the Mark IV.
