Just bought my 6th today :)

I'd love to say I'm done, but when Canon comes out with a newer Ultra-Wide and if the 24-70 gets IS, I'll be back in.

Today was a 70-300 L. I have a 70-200 F/2.8, but the 70-300 is smaller and a little longer and if I'm not shooting concerts or low light, I think the 300 should come in handy. Will be nice to compare IQ as I LOVE the 70-200. As sharp as my 50 1.2 for sure.

Arrives while I'm out of town next week so will be a bit before I can micro-adjust with FoCal and post comparisons.

~Bob

You'll love the 70-200! It is scary sharp and the IS is fabulous. I'm looking forward to seeing if the 70-300 is as good.

I just got one...so far, very impressed, however I have never used a 70-200 L of any version to compare it to.

I'm looking forward to your sharpness comparison as well. Thinking of selling the 70-200 and picking up the 70-300L to give me more reach. Please get back to us with the comparison! :)

Will do, but likely it will be about the 28th when I get a weekend to micro-adjust and go out with both lenses.

Thats fine :D I wont be able to buy the lens until I make a trip to B&H sometime in August anyway :) I'm hoping the results are close enough to convince me! I'd really like that extra reach and save some money.

What exactly IS micro-adjust?

Why do you do it?

How does one know that its needed?

Is it difficult?

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

Wow. Complicated question. It matches the tolerance of focus of the lens to the body. I only have one lens that did not need it on either body. I used to do it with test charts, then the Michael Tapes alignment tool who's name escapes me and now I use Reikan FoCal which gives me great results quickly and better than I can do manually. The results are noticeable when you get front/back focus set just right.

Of course, with zooms, you can either get one end or the other spot on, or compromise a bit for general range. And the new 1D X coming will be able to store values for both ends.

Micro-adjust, or MA, is a capability found on the higher-end Canon camera bodies. It allows the user to adjust the focal plane of the lens/camera combo to optimize the focus of the image on the sensor for the distance the camera thinks is supposed to be in focus.

It can have one value of adjust per lens model (the camera remembers which adjustment goes with which lens model), which is all you need for Primes, and I believe can have two values for zoom lenses (one for each end of the zoom, interpolated for the FLs in between).

I believe some bodies only have one MA value for zoom lenses - not sure about that though.

See the Canon Learning Center article here:

L lenses are gateway drugs. They lead to harder substance abuse and petty crime to afford the habit. I read a story once that most homeless people in skid row in LA and the downtown east side of Vancouver were once Canon camera users. Its a dangerous path
