I am looking to buy a flash for Macro work and the two I have selected for consideration are the Canon 580EX II and the 430EX II. What I am wondering is whether I need the more expensive 580EX II as opposed to the 430EX II? Will the 580 give me any additional benefit over the 430? Thank you.

I have been happy with the 430EX II but have no experience of the 580. I would try and keep everything as light as possible for hand held shots.

I believe you posted this in the wrong forum. But on a side note maybe look into a ring flash as well.
