Have the opportunity to buy a Canon 17-55 lens from a friend for $700. Only thing is, there is a little dust specks under the front element. Should I be concerned or jump on it and clean it myself (which I dont know how to do). Comes with original everything + lens hood.

Dust doesn't really affect IQ. Cleaning it is a VERY easy procedure, takes maybe ten minutes. Buy it, that's a smoking deal. You'll love it.

Common problem. Clean it, put a good filter in front and won't have to worry about it.

The 17-55 is the ultimate lens for a crop body. 700$ for the lens is a greeeeaaat deal, if you do need help cleaning the dust out, there are multiple videos across the web that will help you in that process.

If a 17-55mm 2.8 didn't contain dust, I would think there is something wrong with it.

I just learned last week how easy it is to clean this thing and I'm a LOT happier now. Watch a Youtube video and just do it - easy as pie.

You almost got a deal as good as I got. almost :)

the 17-55 IS USM should be THE kit lens with the 7D.

Agreed, best lens there is in the EF-S range, should've been L-marked. It does love dust though.

Would need a metal barrel and ideally some sealing (for the dust..), but yeah, it's a great lens.
