How big of a CF card will the 5D2 work with?

Just a quick question, I remember with some older cameras there were limits as to how big of a CF card you could slap in there.

I'm THINKING about getting a 32 GB for my 5D2...will that work no problem? What's the upper limit?

Thanks,
T

I'm using a 32gb Transcend card in mine. No problems so far, but the "shots available" counter only goes up to 999, and the card will allow more than that, even in RAW mode. It'll just read 999 until the card fills up a bit, then it will come down to the correct number.

Thanks...that sounds fine, my 5Dc does that as well...I ended up ordering 2x16GB instead just in case one corrupts or whatever...

I won't use larger than 16MB.... That gives me about 500 shots with 5DII and I'd rather occasionally change my cards than "put all my eggs in one basket". Currently have two 16GB that mostly are used in my 5DII and fourteen 8GB that mostly are used in my pair of 7Ds. Some events I fill six, eight or a dozen cards. On rare days I come home with them all full.

But I will always use a handful of smaller cards, in case any one gets lost, corrupted or whatever. That way I will lose a minimum of the day's work!

I've lost images on a card only twice in ten years shooting digitally.... Once the camera was still writing when I popped open the door to change cards, my bad... I was able to recover about 2/3 of the images from that. The other time it turned out to be a download issue, a bad USB hub... corrupted about 20-25% of the images from the card. To date, I've never lost a card or left one in a pocket when the jeans went through the laundry (knock on wood).

I always shudder to think of losing all of an important job by misplacing a memory card. I recall a couple years ago someone here found a memory card lying in the street with what appeared to be much of a pro's wedding shoot on it. They actually managed to track down the photographer and return it... by identifying the church and the date. I bet that photog was hugely relieved! (HINT: write your name and phone number on your cards with indelible ink such as a Sharpie. That's a reminder to me, too... I have some cards bought recently that I haven't done that yet. D'oh!)

i use 32gb out of ease/lazyness, but i am not a pro and even if i lose my card. i probably have already downloaded and processed 80-90% of the card. I shoot about 1000-3000 pics a month. I use a Lexar pro 32gb. i like the ability to fit ~1000 pics per card. If i was going to shoot 1000 pics in a day i would split it up between 2 cards...3 if it was an important event.

I used a 64GB card in my 5DII with no problems.

But I certainly don't wait until the card fills up before I copy the files to my PC. I copy them as soon as I get home.

Like the others I use a 32 sandisk in my 5D2.. As far as the number of photographs displayed you can get the true number with your info button.

Awesome, thanks...

Like amfoto, I'm a fan of smaller cards just in case something goes bad...going to Europe with 2 x 16 GB, 1 x 8 GB and 2 x 4 GB...so that's 48 GB of storage PLUS, taking a 16GB SanDisk USB thumb drive, in case I need to unload some photos, bringing my total to 64 GB...if that's not enough, I'll just buy more memory haha

To answer the OP question

Canon cameras that use Compact flash can use the full CF Specification of capacities up to 137GB except very early model such as 10D
