Back when I was deciding to buy my first macro lens, my two candidates were the EF 100mm (the 100L wasn't around back then) and the Sigma 150 (No OS version was available).
I ended up buying the EF 100mm (which still blows me away with its quality) and the final decision was made on price. The EF 100mm was 50% cheaper than the Sigma.

PS With a 12mm ext tube you get 0.30x and 0.37x with 25mm (MFD on the 300 f/4L)

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

I ended up with my 100L because I had a return credit at newegg for $450, and something like $300 from a return i did on a non-functioning Sigma 105mm macro... Then Newegg put the 100L on sale for some rediculous price on top of it (i think they wanted $800..) and i was like "Ok yeah"

I mean I've owned other macros, including the Sigma 180mm f/3.5, a Kiron 105, Canon's 60mm, and the 100L is definitely the nicest, but before I got it i really wanted the 150...

After owning it, I dont think id go back to a non-stabilized macro, If anything else it keeps the viewfinder nice and steady when working...

For now I'm using it with my 1.4x teleconverter for a 140mm f/4, i find the focal length much more usable for insects and that, of course the fact i also can now go beyond life size doesnt hurt either ;)

My rental 150 sigma with OS arrived today... and it and I are headed for Costa Rica Wednesday morning. I use these lenses so infrequently I just rent. It will be interesting to see how good the Sigma really is.

Wait, a Sigma butterfly lens for TWICE the price of the spectacular 100L IS? Hmmm, it's got "success" written all over it...

You don't do a lot of comparison shopping do you?

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.

They tested the 180mm f/2.8 OS at Lensrentals...

The 150 OS tests a bit better, the 180 is apparently not the sharpest macro lens wide open (Though id wager that its still very sharp..just not as good as the 100L, 180L, Zeiss 100 or the Sigma 150 which are basically a 4-way sharpness tie..)

I used the Sigma 150 OS and actually found it too long. I am wondering how much harder the 180 would be. I actually couldn't get far enough way from some of my subjects. But then again, I suck at macro photography so the problem most surely could have been with the operator.

Odd thing is my 7D interpreted the lens to be a Canon 100-400 L and all the exif data is wrong. Very funny.

Possibly that you are comparing two products with different purposes...

Not at all, depends on what you're trying to shoot! :)
